Garw LCD Dash

Lets start over with a new thread about instrument cluster upgrades.

Has anyone had any luck with the Garw LCD unit yet in an '05 Elise? Looks like the 8" version is available for sale (or should be soon) but requires a Bennacle Modification to fit the unit. Has anyone tried this yet?

My head is swimming from reading thousands of comments about Dash upgrades. Someone give me the latest on what is possible. New faceplate? New needles that light up?

What gets the job done without breaking the bank or breaking the car?

Thanks!

I'm going to add to this. I've been meaning to go through the entire thread to get some answers...but I've been lazy.

I guess my main question is about mileage. Will this update the mileage...does it read it from the ecu? Or do you input it yourself? And if you ever switch back to your original dash...is there a way to sync that back up to your current mileage?

If I ever sell the car...I'd probably go back to the original dash...and last thing I'd want is some kind of mileage discrepancy.

I'm in the same boat - I want this for my 2005 Elise but got tired of trying to read though 1000+ posts to get answers. As far as the mods required to fit the 8" one in there - doesn't seem like a huge deal - and if you wanted to return to stock I'd just order a spare Bennacle thingy. I know there are other face plates you can get (different colors or whatever) - but as I recall they were close to 200 bucks or something crazy like that. For the money this LCD gizmo seems to be the way to go and for sure has all the bells and whistles you could want. As for what happens with the millage - I have no clue on that - but that is for sure a darn good question.

Mileage is stored in the cluster, so no OE cluster = no updates to mileage. You could always just hook the OE cluster up in the trunk or behind the new dash so it is always recording mileage, I guess. I've seen aftermarket dashes ran that way where they sit on top of the OE one. Not as pretty though, for sure.

I installed my AIM cluster on top of my OEM one. I used a piece of carbon fiber as a back plate. I don't have any pictures right now, but it looks pretty good.

OP wanted to revert back to stock at some point though, so that's where the issue is. There's no way to update the old dash, correct? Other than leaving it connected somehow in the background.

Didn't Duane do that, too? If I recall correctly, it looked fine, too, but maybe I am thinking of yours...

It was probably mine. He did his, but he had a much bigger dash and didn't fit under the binn. He has since upgraded to a newer smaller dash it and it all looks good.

Input mileage

Corvus,

That's my question; How do you input the mileage into the GARW dash? Which window? I haven't seen anyplace to do that.

Your reply will be very much appreciated.

It'd be great if someone could start an FAQ thread or Google doc. I have some of these answers in my head, but having trouble finding references in the giant thread.

I was able to reset the mileage, change it into mph (as opposed to KPH).

Navigating is somewhat tricky (well, for me it is) but you have to get used to it.

I do have other questions for GARW but I will wait until I am able to run through the whole gambit.

Things like:

1. How do you set and reset the "trip odometer".

2. Where is the clock (if there is one).

3. For the S2-08 settings, on the "original dash" why does the "traction control" light show up at the bottom right, over the other "idiot" lights and not in the center of the screen as it is on the original dash.

I'm sure I'll have more as I go but if anybody can answer these questions now, I'd sure appreciate it!

For those still waiting for this unit, you guys (or gals) are gonna LOVE it. Installation is not a biggie at all.

Lee, which size unit did you get? The 7" or the 8"?

Are you happy with it? Is the display large enough? Would the larger display be better?

The only screen that looks small would be the OEM screen but that's because I can compare the two.

The other screens look fine.

The 8" might look better (bigger is always better, right?) but I wanted plug & play and I'm very happy with the unit so far.

I think what we really need is a thread with a checklist of what to do start to finish. Something without a ton of 5 hours videos of cameras bouncing all over the place. A thread where all instructions are listed in the original thread and one person can edit and tidy it up. It really should be on this thread or the other one, reading thru posts is a bit mundane and hardly helpful. Videos are great but you are left with the same thing, lots of skipping around and many sections with 15 minutes of talking... A check list works for all levels of expertise. Links to video where one needs more help and pictures are always a nice to have. Anyways just my 2 pennies....
O LEE O, CRG53 and jambas like this.

Solar Yellow 07 (225 whp)

all recalls complete.
upgraded front speakers to 5.25, back to 6.5 added a 12 inch sub
AikShii's Glove box.
Nexus gen 2 custom made radio Bessel.
