ECU Secrets

Is the Gizmo that can pull the info off the ECU just a Lotus Dealer issued machine, or is there any after market software/hardware that you can get this info from? Are we all at the mercy of the Lotus Dealer to determine how naughty we have been? I can't believe that there is not someone/something out there that can't tap in to the deepest, darkest secrets our cars beyond the dealers....

All in good time, I'm sure.

Right now, I believe this is the only tool that can do it:

Lotus issued them to service centers. I have no idea who actually makes them for Lotus, what they have inside, or if they're custom. Anyone know? Played with one?

Come on, someone here has to be buddies with a service tech by now, and I know we have a few techs resident here too. What else can be said about the scantool?
