Lotus isn't exactly known for shipping in order. The dealer demo which arrived a month before my car had a VIN about 80 cars newer.

Also, you should realize that the serial numbers of the VIN are for all 2005 Elise models so if they've started UK and ROW 111 production for the 2005 model year then the VIN no longer represents just US version Elises.

I know my #1000 seems high but Mark did give me a full VIN and I can assume he did not make it up!

My question is does anyone else have a Laser Blue car arriving soon. I was told they were batching the Laser Blue so I wonder if anyone else is expecting a car and if they have a similar VIN.

I also wonder whether the VIN's number sequence is unique for the US cars or mixed with ROW cars? Are the 111R 2004 or 2005 in the ROW?

I'm not sure if you know this but my car is Laser Blue and I was told they were batched. Look earlier in this thread to see my VIN. I can't se it from this post.

Pretty sure the vin number ranges are separate for US and ROW cars.

No. I'm pretty sure I'm right...

From the Elise Model History document that you can download from the Lotus UK website:

2005 M.Y. Elise for North America: May 2004
VIN character 10 = 5; Character 12 = L; Serial number from 0001
Note that the serial number sequence is shared with other ‘05 M.Y. Elise variants.
Differences compared with Elise 111R include: Driver and passenger airbags, pyrotechnic seat belt pre-tensioners; Re-styled fascia and dashboard structure; Front speakers moved onto top surface of fascia, stowage pockets incorporated into dashboard end panels, fixed windscreen demist vents. Engine start button in driver’s side switch panel. Revised springs and dampers, Yokohama AD07 tyres. Side marker lamps on front and rear wheelarch lips. Revised fuel system with fuel filler flap.

2005 M.Y. Elise/Exige (non-USA): Sept. 2004
VIN character 10 = 5; Serial number from 0597 (sequence shared with USA model).

Actually you posted the beginning of the VIN which is the "generic" part except the check digit. My number 1000 is the last four digits of the VIN. You posted 11105 which is the part of the VIN that identifies it as a type 111 (all Elises).

So are the last four digits near 1000?

EDIT: Sorry Fish, I did not see your later post. Your 988 and my 1000 seem consistent. Maybe they built a dozen laser blue babies.

So with ROW and Elise S/N's being combined the S/N's will escalate quickly. With up to 150 cars a week the S/N's will climb almost 600 numbers a month at maximum production volume.

But Mike,
It seems a bit confusing in that the 111R was for sale some months before the US cars were built and yet the first US cars started at 0001 (the first 6-8 were test cars)? Lotus must have reserved vins for the first US cars, as mine is 0028, unless the first 111rs sold in rest of world were 04 models.

Mike I reread your posting from the pdf file, I see that they did indeed reserve the first 596 spots (thereabout) for US cars, so it would seem after sn 0597 (first non-us elise) would signal the beginning of shared numbers, that explains things.

And fuurthermore, there must be some region from 597 on that in all non-us, which would help explain the sudden jump in serial numbers coming to the us.

It isn't that they reserved numbers for the US Elises. All Elises use the same VIN serial number pool for the 2005 year. The reason the first several hundred 2005 models were all US Elises is that US Elise production started early for the 2005 year so that all cars would be 2005s. Everyone else began the 2005 year starting with cars built on September 1, 2004. So the car right behind yours in the production line (if it was, say, July) could well have been a 2004 Elise while your US Elise was a 2005.

VIN 1000 Update:

My car arrived at HRM today and I am planning to pick it up on Wednesday

Laser Blue, touring, starshield and painted console. Will check out the stage 2 exhaust when I am at HRM.

Deposit Aug 30 2003, projected delivery 12/1/2004 or 15 months. But the real wait has been much longer. I have been a Lotus fan since the Type 72 and I tried to buy an Elan in the 80's so that means I have been waiting about 30 years!

Yep. And I think the previous statement about not shipping in order is correct as well. My VIN 801 SY has been in port since October 30.

I was only told October, which is consistent with my November 13th arrival in port and November 27th arrival at the dealer (with the Thanksgiving holiday in there). Seems like they are working out the logistics and keeping the cars moving better than before (at least on the East Coast) Ridgeman will tell you what is happening on the left coast

This is just ballparking it at best, but if we are receiving VIN's in the 900-1000 range, that would equate to about 750-800 cars now in the US. (We received the first 600, and about half of the remaining 300-400). This helps explain the shifting pricing, premium reduction in some parts of the country.

Vin Number?

Dear All:
Just chiming in with my Vin # 0905, Arctic Silver, red interior, hard top, touring package and star shield.
I'm in the west coast, which doesn't quite explain the delayed theory.
I wonder if the first 2,000 or 2,200 were initially allocated a specific vin number, and then built according to paint colour? I've read more than once in these threads that the paint colour has some bearing as to when it's built.
Anyway, in port since allegedly November 23, 2004 some 13 painful days ago. Still no update aside from "any day now".
