Driver Wanted - Must be reliable

Last fall when Renault made the announcement that they would not have a Renault factory formula 1 entry for 2011 but would instead pair with Lotus, I immediately wished Robert Kubica would pilot one of these cars. Sometime in early winter, there was an announcement saying exactly that. I was elated. Kubica had shown himself as a pretty quick driver, especially toward the end of last season. Renault had a lot of experience in F1. It looked like a chance to see the Lotus logo on the podium a few times during this season.

Now Robert lays in a hospital, possibly never to drive again, probably not to drive for most of the 2011 season. I'm disgusted. Not to bash Petrov (as he is a hell of a faster driver than I) but I don't think he can get to the top slots.

Would it kill Renault / Lotus to add the words "PLEASE LIST YOUR HOBBIES" to their driver's job application. Oh well, there's still the green car (if they ever get it working). Sorry, just had to get that out.

It depends on the contract. Some contracts do curtail the extracurricular activities of the drivers. Others permit it.

I'm 110% sure Kubica's intention to participate in the rally competition was a stipulation in his Renault contract.

Edit: Yes I was correct. See:
On Monday Renault defended their decision. “Rallying is a very important thing for Robert,” said a team spokeswoman. “Driving a F1 car, a go kart or a rally car is a way of finding his personal balance.
“He knew the risks and he always insisted that his contract should let him drive other cars than F1.”
