Elise, 4C & Cayman Video

Hey guys,

I was lucky enough to help Todd & Paul with their EverydayDriver shoot recently, here's a link to their video on Vimeo:

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/midenginesandmountains

I just watched it and really enjoyed it, not just because the Elise is in it (of course I'm biased in that regard ) but because it's an excellent comparison of the 3 cars. Very different approaches to the same desired result.

Trailer is pretty lame. 3-2-1 drag race in two cars that don't pull? yawn. drag race is not these cars' strong suit. Camera truck should have slowed down at that point to give more dramatic effect. I rented it anyway since I've never seen vimeo on demand, thought I'd try it out. For $3 sure why not.

I'll report back in a couple of hours.

Well it was worth $3 but not worth an hour of my time. I had to power through the last 20 minutes. Chris Harris has nothing to fear.

It has all the flair of a motorweek car review. OK that's rude, it's not that bad, but it did /remind/ me of motorweek.

That said, I did learn something about all 3 cars so like I said, it was worth the $3. After watching it I do feel like I have a sense of all of them, but then again I have lots of miles in both a cayman and an elise so I have a reference point and a lot of the video was reminding me of that.

I think the video could go from 3 stars to 4.5 stars if it were only 20-25 minutes and if there was more drama. Like I don't need to see them wake up and get the coffee, ok? They spent a godawful amount of time on the highway. Who cares!! We already know the cayman kills it on the highway and the elise sucks. Maybe I never bought into the premise that they were evaluating a "road trip" -- but the title sure conveys canyon carving not freeway cruising. The other major thing is it would help a lot if the sound quality were better.

The worst 2 bits of commentary for me were near the beginning.

10:00 "the alfa has much if not all of the emotional flavor that ferrari has". umm no

12:45 "the alfa is like sitting in a wallet ... that's empty ... because you just paid for this car". I'm not sure what that is supposed to convey, but it's wholly inaccurate because it costs the same as the cayman! (the car he was comparing against at the time)

I enjoyed it... you know, playing in the background while I did CADD. It was fun to learn about the Alfa.

I think just watching the video I just realized something I never noticed before...but the back end on the 4c really leaves you wanting more...because it is just plain jane and kind of ugly to me. The two BIG RED DOTS for brake lights and turn signals on a nearly flawless rear end...I officially lost interest in the car because of that.

2005 Lotus Elise Graphite Grey - Salvaged title started the SSM build!!!
Maverick ML8 - Other daily
2005 VW Passat Station Wagon TDI (harder to find than the lotus?)
2005 Lotus Elise Starlight Black - Sold

While that didn't make me uninterested in the car, I agree that it's kind of strange looking. Definitely not enjoying two red dots.

I think the Elige walks that line with dual-tail lights pretty well. I'm sure some car nerd can point out 50 cars that have used it in the past but when I see it, I think Ferrari or Corvette in that order.

If that Alfa had duals for tail lights it'd be too much "me too". I agree they should do something with that space design-wise but I dunno if dual tail lights are it.

Guess I'm the oddball - I think it's great. The only thing I don't like about the looks are the wheels -- easily changed.

I'm assuming you also got some seat time in the Alfa 451 since they used your Elise? If so would love your thoughts on the car being a lotus owner and all (biased or not )

Yep I got to drive it

At ~2500 pounds and 237HP (at least by some reading I've found) I think it's pretty damn good. I have an inkling now of what the S240 and S260 and above guys are feeling. I can imagine more power with a lighter car must be even more intoxicating.

I liked the cockpit, liked the carbon fiber trim everywhere, didn't mind the paddle shifters but would prefer a stick. I don't like the wheels, don't mind the rear end that much and dislike the front "beak" thing but design opinions aside I think it's a pretty cool car.

I thought going into it, that it was going to look like an Evora size-wise. In person to me it's like they shrunk the Evora and made it the size of an Elige. And kept it two seater of course. I liked the lack of power steering and didn't mind the wheel-feel but Todd (from EveryDayDriver) and myself are in total agreement that the steering is good in the Alfa, better than most maybe, but not "as" telekinetic in feel as the Elise is.

So overall I like it, not for $65-85K or wherever they'll land, but down the road they might definitely be worth it. That said, it just further reinforces my desire for MORE power (and better shocks ).

I agree...what I was actually thinking is that they should have done either LED strips that follow the body lines and blend in or did White LED break/tail lights...however the last suggestion would only have worked on the White, not necessarily many other colors. or maybe it is just the SIZE of the red dots...feel like they could have done the same, just with a smaller red dot.
