The new panel glows behind the knobs, and looking at closeup, the old one doesn't. Unless there was some way to remove the paint, it looks like you would need both parts.

take care,

My plan is to cut away the overlay behind the knob with an xacto knife to expose the glowy.

There are 2 kinds of knobs on earlier cars. Early ones have a brushed aluminum finish, and newer cars have ones that look like they are chrome plated. I believe they changed to the chrome ones in late 05 models.

There are 2 panels also. One for cars with a/c and one for cars without it.
A/C delete was an option that started in 2006 or 2007.

Enable Lights

I came across this by accident - I was looking for info on how to remove the HVAC panel (still looking?). I have a new 2009 Purist, and my panel does not light up - only the AC button - and I just assumed Lotus saved .00034 ounces by not having 4 more grain of wheat bulbs, but now I would like to have my panel glow, too. It appears I have the newer panel, and the knobs with the potential to light up. I need to remove the panel to see if all the wiring is there (how?), but if it isn't, then I guess I would need a new panel (but really just for what's behind it). Crazy!

Dylan, it appears that many don't light up from new - but they all should (even my 2002 car does and it pre-dates any form of touring pack!). As your dealer to check it out.

The factory QC is not good. The some of the inverter only good for a while. I am waiting for dealer to replace it.

Rear fog lamps?

We have the wiring for those? Is it difficult to get them working? On old BMWs, you just poked a hole in the plastic and popped in a new lamp. It was pretty straightforward. There was a blanking panel on the dash that got a new switch, and instant fogs. MINI now sells them as an option. Would be cool to have on the Elise.

It may be tucked somewhere not very visible, but it should be present.

probably a good idea to make a new thread. Don't know how many people are going to click on backlighting HVAC to read about fog lights.

Had car in for service today, and they fixed the hvac panel so it now lights. Said ribbon wire not in right place. Oh those loony Brits, always larking about with the wiring

I believe the overlay is just paint on an Electroluminescent sheet. So, if you took an xacto to it you would probably ruin the illumination too. Masking off what you want to keep & then sandpapering off the paint would probably be your best bet.

I just ordered the parts to upgrade my 2005 Elise 111s

You need the later type panel and the three knobs.
The knobs were 11 each but the panel cost 80

Total cost was 150 including VAT (about $220) but I think it will be worth it, as although my panel is back lit I cannot see the control positions at all in the dark.

I just accidentally got the illuminated switch panel as a replacement for my '05. Reading this thread has been excited to think I might be able to get it all lit up! Definitely not something I thought I was missing, but now I really want it. We shall see.. Knobs and panel were only $140 from mylotusgarage

Rather than start a new thread, I'll bump this to let people know what a failing electroluminescent board looks like on the HVAC console.

I noticed the light above my fan speed setting was getting darker earlier this summer, and now it's dark except for a section spanning 3-6 o'clock. Worse, these dark spots (dead phosphors) are developing around the other controls!

The inverter checked out fine after I bypassed it with a 9V battery and got the same result.

I even tried ironing the dark sections as sometimes that can seal open ends/shorts in these EL boards, but no dice. New ones are $210+ from lotusgarage. Think I'll just keep mine and unplug the illumination harness from the inverter to stop the sketchy lighting at night.

The HVAC lights on my 2008 Exige were working properly when I got the car in 2014 but around
2016 they slowly failed until all the lights were out. It happened incrementally until everything
on the panel went dark. It is a non-issue because I can adjust the knobs without looking. There are only three so
it's easy to remember.
The device that creates the illumination is very expensive to replace and I don't think it can be replaced alone
so a new panel must be purchased......that was what I recall from speaking with Lotus Garage.

The electric window button still illuminates. It must use a traditional LED. Maybe Lotus should have used LEDs
in the HVAC panel,,,,then this would not be an issue.

I've just replaced my HVAC controls as the backlighting never worked since I purchased the car in May of 2016. A few observations:

Lotus uses a new manufacturer and the superseded part number for illuminated controls is: B120P0021F

You can see in my photo comparing the two that the original unit (top) has the ribbon connector and the new unit (bottom) uses a soldered connection. Too, the circuit board has been positioned on the opposite side in these new units. Wires still reach.

This is a simple repair. Just two tabs (pictured) to release the surround from the dash.

The replacement parts is a bit pricey, around $180. Still, I love the backlights. See before and after.
