It's better than spending $275k on a 430 Scuderia only to park next to a $25k 308.

Similar to the one that has existed between many Elise/Exige/Evora owners and the Europa/Esprit/Elan/7/Elite etc. Owners?

It may be more pronounced with the new line, but for a lot of the current Lotus owners the brand was an abstract, if anything about it was known at all, before the Elise came to market.

I was actually thinking that they should swap the name tags on the Elan and Elise. The Elan looks great and ready to build, whereas the Elise seems a bit too much like a futuristic concept car.

Didn't Agent TripleX indicate she was going to be at the show? It might be good to wait for some in-person assessments.

This reminds me of the transformation of Porsche when they introduced the 996 design language and Boxter to expand their audience and growth strategy. Many purist Porsche owners including myself bitched about the design and the fact you couldn't tell the Boxter and 911 apart from the front. Well lets fast forward and you canít argue their growth both in sales and brand equity.

I think they are on the right track to increase the brand globally and most importantly anchor their dealer network.

My dos centavos...

to be totally honest, if I were to spend that kind of money on an exotic, no f'ing way I would buy a lotus.

give me a ferrari that has stood by it's heritage.

heritage is something that people want that dollar bracket.

What person, that just spent $150k on their new exotic lotus wants to go to pebble beach and park next to a bunch of $25k used elise's and $15k elan's?
I dunno about that - Lotus has always been "right there" with the Italian cars for being exotic, cool, whatever you want to call it. At least with the Esprit they were in the 80's/90's. My '87 Esprit is everything a similar vintage 308/328 Ferrari is, probably better in many respects. It causes just as much commotion as any Italian car and Ive yet to see anyone "disappointed" when they find out its a Lotus and not Italian.

That being said - When you get into the $150K range I will admit that people will rightfully be very picky about the badge on the nose. I can see their point. At that price range, its almost expected that its a Lambo or an F-car.

So, it might take some time but a new Esprit with world-class performance could easily be "accepted" as a choice in that high-cost category if the car is everything its cracked up to be. Give it some time. Ya never know.

The funny thing is that I'd take the 308 all day over the 430. The 308 is timeless, the 430 is a good looking car but is not timeless whatsoever. Go ahead and laugh at me, its OK.

Plus, all that money I just saved would allow me to buy 4-5 other cars Ive always wanted. Thats my take on it....

And, if its all about showing off your $bank$, why not just get a big juicy Bently or Rolls and be done with it?

I am watching, what I believe is a webcast on lotuscars.com, and I am really surprised by the number of cars released.

I believe the company's new line up is quite bold and impressive.

The controversial U-turn in Lotus design aesthetics

It has been said that an automotive design can only be regarded as meaningful or interesting if it provokes a reaction, either positive or negative. As a loyal lover of Lotus cars for more than three decades, my reaction to the range of new Lotus cars on display at the Paris Motor Show is anything but positive. The range as a whole can only be described as beyond hideous....and as for the new Elite....well, people who have criticised the looks of the 1970's Elite will probably now find the latter remarkably pretty when they witness with dismay what will be bearing the Elite name in a few years from now. I suspect the new Elan might age the best though; at least it looks a little like a baby Lamborghini Gallardo (with the eye of faith). As far as I'm concerned, the whole lot could very easily be rebadged as Protons; there is an overwhelming flavour of kitsch in the design language.

I shall definitely be hanging onto my Elise and Excel for many years to come (as will a great many other loyal Lotus lovers, I suspect). Colin Chapman must be turning in his Grave...

When I saw the Elite last week I thought it was a little strange looking as it had no connection with the current line up of Lotus. Now that I've seen all 5 new cars, with the design language that carries over from each model to the next I love them. I can only hope the Elise stays in the same 50K price range and the Elan around the same as an Evora. The choice between the 2 is going to be a hard one.

The S3 Elise will not be released until 2015, which allows for a substantial amount of time for changes. However, the new models, in my opinion, do not scream the traditional lotus vibe of being unique (but this may be good for Lotus).

I am going to hold my judgement about the vehicles until I see some more specs.

It's seem like they are putting these out there awfully early. It maybe as much an exercise to gage interest and reaction. They certainly have time with the Elise to change up the styling.

I'm not sold on the styling, but these are concepts, so they can change.

I think the Elan is just the Evora 2.0, so we'll see the name evora go away, but the car won't. I do like the Elan, and i'd consider one as a daily car if i could afford it.

certainly interesting, wonder how this will play out.
