Interesting. My Elise has a build date (on the door) of May 2004. I guess I don't need it. *shrug* ?

Just wondering by some chance if the oil lines become dettached and mess up the engine is Lotus liable for a new engine???

well i just did my oil change so I won't be taking it in for the next 2900 miles. if my car was built before 11/30/06, which i have a feeling it was. I'm sure there's no time limit to get this done. If the car needs it, the car needs it.

Contacted my dealer and was emailed back a Lotus official answer basically telling me they are aware of it and looking into it but are not taking any actions at this time. So yes to recall but no for action from Lotus or dealers.

I thought there were cases where cars build after 2006 had the oil line failure. Can we somehow document all these cases?

So I now have 2 questions on this subject.

1. What if I have a failure between now and when my dealer will supposedly fix this problem? I doubt they will compensate me for any repair costs if something happens between now and then...

2. What if I have a failure after they fix the problem? I am wondering if we are going to get some kind of warranty from Lotus on this fix. I doubt we will, but I bring it up because I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" motto. I also sometimes question the repairs done at the dealer...

I would be pretty happy though if they gave me a credit towards buying the ULTRAliteLINES that Sector sells or something similar, and then I would be happy signing a waiver accepting responsibility for getting them installed, and relinquishing them from responsibility and so on and so forth... But I think we have talked about all of this too in other threads it seems.

Because life is too short to drive a boring car.

i sent an email to rick macleish ([email protected]), which was forwarded to ron mann ([email protected]) who replied:

"We will add your contact information to our data base. Lotus is working on a remedy and as soon as possible will notify the appropriate authorities, its customers and dealers and will provide a timetable for completion."

Any one had an older recall done when the closest dealer was out of state? I live in Milwaukee and my closest dealer is 1 and a half hours away. There is almost no way I would be able to get down there before spring and even then the weekend would be my only option.
I know a few more people up here that will have the same problem. Any idea on how long it will take to do the job?
Also my 2 cents is this is not a voluntary recall. aka NHTSA is telling Lotus to make this happen because they didn't want to do it on their own accord. This means Lotus is scrambling right now for an engineering fix. Even if they decide to use the newer version of the line that have been using since 07 they will have a supply issue. They have 5000 cars to fix and have been selling a fraction of that number lately. Plus they might have already done a life of part buy since they are stopping production.

I doubt anyones getting a refund for already changed lines but I bet they will still let u get the new version.

Also it's gotta be the whole lines, the crimping of the ends can only be done to new material and in a factory I'm sure.

If brute force is not working you're not using enough.

I saw this thread like 2 weeks ago, shoulda got started then. Luckily I was just leaving a Friends, following the fiancé in a 25 mph zone. All of a sudden Oil light started to flicker.

I am gonna call the numbers from that pdf and see where I can get. Its off season for me but Man that would suck if I had to wait to get it fixed...

Gonna try out this new Pittsburgh dealership if I can get a part sent..


P.s beyond the obvious is there any way to confirm the line is broken? is there somewhere I can see the line without disassembling the car?

I am thinking maybe to take of some under tray panels. Do then need to remove the clam to get to the lines?

Is the oil on the whole passenger side? If yes, then it would be one of the front connections that failed. Remove front passenger wheel and wheel liner then you can see the oil line and oil cooler.

Looks like the puddle in garage is more towards back n middle. I guess I'll be able to see the motor side connection after I pull the under trays. Seems Like lotus is dragging their feet on giving out the part. Anyone know the price for a new pair?

Have you ever changed your oil? If so, the connectors are in the same area.

No I just got it and org owner said he just changed it, I took alook at it n it was still clearish. Been 300 miles.


I had planned to do it all this winter, guess I'm half way there now.

I'm gonna pull all the trays off, the wheel well in front n see if I can get to the parts.



Don't have the garage space to pull it apart, finishing my basement means all the stuff from basement is stacked around my car and the other space..

If brute force is not working you're not using enough.

checked and mine is 10/2006. Haven't gotten any letter yet.

Boggles my mind that Lotus don't use standard AN fittings and lines -- you know, the stuff they use in airplanes ... ugh, they just don't get it ... pay a little more now or A LOT more later.

What annoys me is that they say it only affects 05-06 cars. My car is an 08 and one of the front fittings looks greasy and looks to be weeping at the fitting. Going off on a slight tangent my car was supposed to have the upgraded ac relay since it hat an early 08 build date but I ended up having the relay from an 06 build

Yea I'm leaning more towards after
Market. They seem to just be fixing what the got caught for. I'm sure they'll slap something like what's on your car in mine, a bit better but not the true fix.

By the time I have the car towed and waste my time messing with the dealership it's not really worth getting some sub par solution.

I'm about to just take both clam shells off and just start getting this thing read for next summer. There is a track, beaver run.

I'm on a hunt to see a clam hinge installed, like where it's mounted with the clam up. I think I'll be getting that

I was one of the complainants with NHTSA - the one whose 2006 Elise caught on fire. I was contacted by the US Lotus rep responsible for the recall proceedings. His name is Ron Mann - a very nice guy. Lotus is in the process of aligning a repair plan of action for this recall. So we all are in a don't call us we'll call you mode probably until early 2012.

If you have experienced the issue, email Ron at [email protected] with your VIN.

The problem is simply that the BNC press on fittings for the oil lines to/from the engine to the oil coolers 'pop' out over time creating a very unsafe condition both to your car, to your personal safety and the safety of others. I had mine replaced (4 of them) with aftermarket competition fittings that have really aggressive barbs and are each fastened on the hose sides by 2 clamps. The parts ran me over 60 bucks a piece and labor was about $1,000. I am seeing if Lotus will reimburse me for what I paid. I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. If your's haven't popped yet - they definitely will. Write to Ron, get it checked and replaced hopefully for free. I would check to make sure that they DO NOT replace the fittings with new fittings of the same type.
