I think the 2-version strategy on such a low-volume item is a mistake- instead of the lower price one seeming like a better deal, to me it makes them both seem like a bad deal.
"Oh, I can buy the one I don't want (missing inside scratch resistant coating and storage case) for $3100 shipped.
Or.......... the one I do want, which should be maybe $100 or $200 more, they want $3500 shipped."
I'm glad they developed the product, and I'm sure it was expensive to tool and is expensive to make. It was probably an easy sell to $100K Tesla Roadster owners, but a lot harder to sell to $30K Elise owners who mostly seem interested in spending their upgrade money on making their suspension stiffer.
