1936 Auto Union with Rolls Royce Merlin

I was out at the local track today and spotted this in the workshops.
I didnt get much info but apparently it has been a scratch build by a local guy .
All he had to go by was a model and a schematic ... see pictures .
This replica is a little bit longer than the original as he could not source the original engine so elected to go with a 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin Engine . Have a look on Wikipedia
Enjoy the pictures ... thought you may find them interesting .
Unbelievable what some people build !!!

I saw the original V16s at Laguna Seca years ago when they brought all of the Auto Union mid-engined 1930's GP cars to Monterey.
The sound of the V16 is more like a fighter airplane of the era, some of the cars developed crazy power from burning nitrobenzene.
Dr. Porsches mid-engined designed cars were too advanced for the tire technology of the times, therefore the use of four rear wheels for better traction.

I think they were also using drum brakes, too, right? I don't know my Auto Union cars well enough at all, but I saw one in a German museum a few years ago. The combination of technology in one area and stone-age in another on the same car is what really makes them terrifying to me, haha

Remember Hans Stuck - his father of the same name drove these beasts besting the rest of the world's best at GP cars for the glory of the Third Reich.
Mercedes Benz calls their race cars Silver Arrows today, but back then it was a name for all of these advanced German designed racing cars that dominated the 1930s - before Hiter caused a hiatus for Grand Prix racing for a few years.

Wow amazing work that has been done! I wash I had a tiny bit of that kind of talent to build cars.

Very cool...amazing design (Dr. Porsche) and what a beast it must have been to handle....Nuvolari also drove that type did he not? He was certifiable both as a driving genius and brave to the point of stupidity.....

Professor Porsche designed other "track only" vehicles for Corporal Schicklgruber - the Tiger II and the Mouse.

The narrow end of the car is at the rear but to me that looks like it should be the front.

That gives one the impression that the driver's seat is mounted backwards.

I had the same thoughts when I first saw it ... design was a bit different in 1936!!

Think - airplane aero design of the time, like a drop tank, or airfoil.

The work required just to form the body panels for this example must have been formidable.

The alloy bodies for the cars originally were hand formed over a wooden buck. This is the original wooden buck for the Type C:

And the adaptation of the Merlyn V12 to automotive use is no mean feat either. here is what the basic engine assembly, as used in a P51, looks like:

The engine is quite a complicated piece of work. The blow-through carburetor must work at high altitude and while the a/c is flying inverted!
The induction system can be seen on the right hand end in this view:

The siamesed connecting rods can be seen in this cutaway closeup view:

All in all, this car is quite impressive indeed.

Heading back to the workshop tomorrow to pick up my new toy ... so will ask a few details on how they made the body and what was done to the engine .
I know they had trouble cooling it hence the double layer of Rads but it would be good to get more details.

Maybe it's me, but if I had an RR Merlin engine, I would build this around it.

I called back in today , but missed the owner / builder again.
But did find out they have not used a wooden buck or similar ... it was built panel by panel and the sheets rolled as required , they made jigs to ensure the panels were the same both sides.
The gearbox is from sort of high horsepower roundy round car , not Nascar but similar apparently ... sorry we dont really follow that type of racing here in NZ . It was a 5 speed but converted to three speed so that they could fit larger gears in.
It actually has 3 radiators , 1 in the front and two in the back , plus fans on all of them .
They are fitting fans below the engine to extract the hot air , as they do want to add any venting to the body to change the look of it .
Its taken 7 years to get to this point !!
A figure in Excess of $1m to date was mentioned.
