Blue Angels crash

One dead, but not the pilot. Someone on the ground, I guess?

I saw this earlier shortly after arriving home from a staging area for a local airshow. Today is "Thunder over Louisville" in Louisville, the kickoff for a the Kentucky Derby festivities & a HUGE fireworks display after an afternoon long airshow through downtown. My wife and I spent a few hours at the airstrip they use to stage the machines and had a chance to talk to a few pilots & crew people. We came home to this news and it kinda hit us, it could have just as easily been one of the Apache pilots we were talking to. Also hit us because we spend a lot of time in Gulf Shores Alabama and quite often will see the Blue Angels practicing.

Sad man.

If it was the pilot, hopefully he died at least doing something he loved.

Anyways, RIP

It's really too bad. Somehow it seems worse when it is a Blue Angel (I've seen them perform many times over the years), but it is no more tragic than any other fatal aviation mishap... and they do happen now and then. I just watched the movie Flyboys about the Lafayette Escadrille flying combat missions in WWI and it kind of put it in perspective for me. Those early planes were like flying motorcycles they were so crude. Life expectancy of Lafayette Escadrille pilots was 6 weeks, at least that's what they said in the movie. Leather helmet, goggles, leather jacket, spin the prop to start, open cockpit, lots of mechanical failures -- CRAZY unsafe compared to flying today. Anyway, it's sad to lose a Blue Angel and that must have been a real downer for the whole airshow weekend crowd.

The F18 in the top middle of this photo is the one that crashed. The photo was taken just before the crash. He clipped a pine tree.

Some co-workers and I were standing on in breezeway at a railing in Kearny Mesa (San Diego) in 2000, when an F18 Hornet clipped the top of a pine tree located directly in front of us. The sound of the plane was deafening, and the whole top of the tree bent and shook violently. It scared the crap out of us! There was no crash that day, thank God. Ironic incident to me.

wow, that sucks. I always admire those guys. Takes a lot of balls, I think, to be able to do all that...even just to be a fighter pilot.
