How Wealthy Amateurs Can Buy Their Way Into Top-Tier Racing Teams

How Wealthy Amateurs Can Buy Their Way Into Top-Tier Racing Teams

We spoke with Toni Calderon, executive producer of the new Netflix documentary "The Gentleman Driver."

[G: I saw this film last night and enjoyed it.)

If you've spent any time around amateur or professional racing, you've heard the term "gentleman driver." Plenty of racing teams, including those at the top tiers of motorsports, rely on wealthy non-professional drivers who pay for the chance to be a part of the action. A new documentary, The Gentleman Driver, takes you inside this world, following business moguls with a passion for racing and the money to chase that dream all the way to the top.

Executive Producer Toni Calderon joined The Marshall Pruett Podcast to take us behind the scenes of the new film (available on Netflix), which chronicles the lives of four businessmen attempting to earn respect and success in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA's WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. It's a fascinating story and an up-close look at a part of racing few of us will ever experience firsthand.

I have been friends with a gentleman racer who raced at the top levels in the 70s and 80s. He had an incredible garage full of cars he raced as well as cars he had built for fun. Unfortunately he just recently passed away. One of these cars made rounds in the press including Jay Leno's Garage after he passed. He was a complete character and a fascinating guy. I'll have to watch this video.

No. These are very successful businessmen and the film is more interesting because we learn about their backgrounds, accomplishments.
