Recommendations for today:

Bad Obsession Motorsports, "Project Binky" latest episode is now out:

I've mentioned how good this series is in the past. They are stuffing a AWD Toyota drivetrain into an original, tiny Mini.

If you like creative thinking and excellent fabrication, watch these guys.

This episode is fascinating, how to update the Mini wiper systems to modern, RAIN-SENSING wipers.

------

I saw "A Quiet Place" last night.

Horror movie that is actually scary. Creatures are blind and attack sources of sound. Creatures are very fast, strong and vicious.

Great marks on Rotten Tomatoes:

R called the other day with a problem.

He’d just replaced the front pads in his wife’s minivan. Now, the pedal was on the floor and he couldn’t pull it up. And, the car would not move.

First, I said, “R, we had a deal where you wouldn’t work on cars any more!”

He has the reverse-Midas touch in such matters. The darkest of black thumbs.

I wasn’t sure what was going on with his brakes and he’s 2 hours away, so I called Carbuff. Now, we were both stymied.

R called back. He’d bled one of the front corners and now the pedal was working again.

“R, when you pushed the pistons back into the calipers, did you remove the master cylinder lid or any brake fluid?”

No to both.

“You add brake fluid as the pads wear. When you install thicker pads, where do you expect the brake fluid to go?”

He said he never had to do that with any other cars.

I mentally shrugged.

PS: Great hint from a guy here on Lotustalk:

When changing brake lines and/or removing calipers, he puts something like plastic wrap over the master cylinder and then puts the cap back on.

This keeps the fluid from running out while we’re working on the system.

How to Plug a Hole in a Flat Tire

If you don't have a spare, but do have a tire plugging kit, you should know how to use it.

Changing a flat tire is pretty easyóif you have a spare, that is. But if the manufacturer didn't give your car a spare tire from the factory (many don't these days, sadly), then usually, all you're stuck with is a tire plug kit. Here's how to use it properly.

Wyatt Knox of the Team O'Neil Rally School put together a impromptu video educating us on how to use a tire kit that will properly seal a small hole in your tire. The first step, obviously, is to find the hole. Knox uses a bubbly soap and covers the tire all the way around until air bubbles start to appear. If there's an object stuck in the tire, like a nail or screw, take it out, then round out the hole with a screwdriver or a similar tool. This will make the next step easier.

Most plug kits come with a pointy tool used to stick the tire sealant into the car (though it can vary depending on what kind of kit you have). Stuff it into the rounded hole, and remove any excess material. Give it a second to seal up, then fill up the tire with air. Boom: You've just repaired a tire.

Knox recommends that if it's the front tire you just repaired, to switch it with a rear tire, if possible. This way, if the same tire starts to lose air again, it'll be easier to control at speed and bring to a controlled stop.

Mercedes-Benz made a hybrid vehicle in 1906

Early car companies toyed with a mix of electric- and gasoline-powered vehicles before pure petrol-powered engines took over, and Mercedes-Benzí Mixte model was their first true hybrid. It had a gas engine in front with a dynamo that supplied spark for the two motors in the rear hubs. The Mixte had a claimed top speed of 75 mph.

You may remember my interest in the Citroen 2CV. I did speak to this NJ shop once.

Eurocar Imports closes – or does it?

It was a convoluted set of circumstances that resulted in the demise of Eurocar Imports LLC aka CitroŽn Import Services in Toms River NJ. The close of the company’s location came on January 3. That day a customer was there to pick up his DS that he had taken to Eurocar Imports because its owner, Noel Slade, said he was a “DS Expert”. After giving him $7,000 US and having 4 years go by with nothing done on the car other than having it go through the hurricane Sandy flood, he’d had enough.

The fellow is a former attorney (he is not a lawyer now but he knows how to work the system). He was one of many who made complaints about Noel to New Jersey authorities. While he was there on January 3, Noel was being evicted and a New Jersey consumer complaints guy was there because the landlord was owed $40,000 US! Fortunately he was able to take possession of his DS and send it off to Dave Burnham CitroŽn for repairs.

Dave has helped fix at least 8 very bad cars that were “restored” by Noel that came into his shop. Every one of them took $3,000 to $8,000 US in parts and labour to make them safe and somewhat reliable.

Over the years we at CitroŽnvie have seen a number of shoddy restorations and repairs done by Noel. And we have had complaints from others who paid Noel to get a refurbished CitroŽn but waited years and ultimately never got a vehicle.

There seemed to be a sufficient number of unhappy people that dealt with Noel, enough we thought to dissuade him from either relocating Eurocar Imports or opening a new company. Check this out: https://www.topix.com/forum/city/tom...2274F54ESC0VKI.

Aside from the above link we know of numerous people that put down substantial deposits with Noel on CitroŽns that he said he would restore but were never delivered. They continually got the runaround when inquiring about progress and ultimately just gave up.

For those that did take delivery of vehicles, many were not finished properly and did not pass safety inspection.

We have a member who purchased a restored 2CV with nearly 100 lbs of bondo on the body. A section was already falling off one door after one month. It had electrical problems, the engine blew white smoke and the kingpins were shot, (it failed safety when the owner went to get it certified). You can’t even roll back the roof part way because the flanges at the halfway point are missing. He paid over $22K for the aggravation and waited 2 years to get it.

We have a member who took delivery of a “restored” H Van from Noel to make a food services truck. The van had major electrical issues, the engine head gasket needed to be replaced, a small underrated radiator had been installed, there was bondo coming off the body in many places with rust underneath and only one front brake actually worked! Rear brakes were also installed incorrectly. There a number of other issues with the van as well, that the owner has spent over 2 years trying to put right.

In both cases these people purchased in good faith from Noel and unfortunately did so without first contacting us. And now they are living with consequences, but appreciative of the help we have been able to provide trying to sort out their issues.

In other instances we know of a Dyane that was sent to Eurocar Imports for a paint job, but when the car was shipped back to the customer, the perfectly good engine had been swapped without informing him. There was a 2CV restored by Noel where there was a severe engine knock. It was taken to Dave Burnham for repair where Dave discovered that one of the fingers to the clutch pressure plate had been repaired by attaching the finger in place with bolts and nuts from Home Depot. This caused an imbalance that ultimately wore out the engine’s main crankshaft and bearings to the point the entire engine needed to be replaced as well as damaging the gearbox’s bell housing. And we know of a Acadianne Truckette that while being restored the customer was billed for brand new rear doors. But when the customer got the car back he discovered that under the new paint on the rear doors was the original paint and, of course, the same old doors.

So, imagine our surprise when a few days ago a post appeared on the Rendezvous Facebook page that Noel Slade has started a new operation in West Creek NJ and changed the name to FrenchClassics.US. Americans have been known to start fresh again a number of times and rise to new heights. Perhaps Noel can turn over a fresh leaf with his new company and make it a success. However we note that on the new website: https://frenchclassics.us/ there is no mention of him by name. Somewhat less than forthcoming and we wonder how thrilled the CitroŽn company is about the use of their current logo on the home page?

Although the location for Eurocar Imports is closed, the company’s website is still operational: https://citroenimportservices.com/. You can see in their for sale section that cars are still being offered for purchase!

It amazes us, and many in the CitroŽn community, how Eurocar Imports managed to get people to do business with them. They put their money into internet marketing and played to people, primarily through ebay, who thought CitroŽns were interesting vehicles and were prepared to spend money on a whim without doing due diligence beyond the glowing reviews posted on their website.

What is also sad is that now these vehicles are now out there and from time to time come up for sale to unsuspecting buyers who are most likely in for a nightmare if they purchase one. Fact is you can get a beautifully restored (truly like new) 2CV from reputable sources for less than what Eurocar Imports was charging for their restoration efforts.

In our CitroŽn world your work to date speaks volumes. In the 2CV video with Jerry Seinfeld and Gad Elmaleh from Jerry’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee series is an indicator of the problems with a car from Noel Slade. During the video Jerry and Gad experience numerous starting and running problems. In the closing credits it says “1950 2CV courtesy Noel Slade, Eurocar Imports”.

For anyone buying a CitroŽn these days, we implore you; Do your homework thoroughly! We are a resource to help you ensure that in purchasing a classic CitroŽn or having one repaired, you get connected with reputable sources that deliver quality and value. And we list many such suppliers on our CitroŽn resources page.

UPDATE: April 5, 2018 – We have just discovered that Noel’s “other” old website, CitroŽn Import Services, has come back online. It does not appear to be updated, but to the unsuspecting viewer there is contact info and the impression that cars are available for purchase. It is amazing that this URL and his other site Home are online and have not been shut down by court order. Buyer beware!

Cops: Tractor-trailer crash result of road rage

Noah Cohen For The Star-Ledger

An apparent act of road rage ended when a tractor-trailer driver crashed into a highway median, flipped and overturned across Route 17 in a wreck captured on dashboard camera footage, police said Tuesday.

“Miraculously, no other vehicles struck the tractor which could have resulted in a major accident since it occurred at approximately 9:46 a.m. on a weekday morning,” said Mahwah police Chief James N. Batelli.

The traffic mess began when an SUV driver saw what he believed was a tractor-trailer being driven aggressively and changing lanes in a reckless manner, police said in a statement.

The concerned motorist “decided to take the matter in his own hands and slow the tractor-trailer down to prevent any type of accident,” Batelli added.

Police said the trucker told officers he was driving northbound when the gray SUV entered the same lane in front of him, began braking and straddled the lanes. The trucker said he lost control of the big rig, unsuccessfully tried to regain control, but hit the divider and flipped.

Luckily, the truck was hauling candy and not a hazardous material, the chief said.

Police issued summonses to the truck driver — a 36-yearold man from Depew, New York — for careless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to signal, according to authorities.

The SUV driver — a 44-year-old man from Montebello, New York — was ticketed for reckless driving, failure to maintain lanes, failure to signal and delaying traffic, police said.

Batelli pointed to a marked increase in road rage incidents, including extreme cases of motorists ramming vehicles or ending with confrontations.

“In this latest incident the proper approach would have been for the driver of the SUV to have dialed 9-1-1 and report the tractor to law enforcement,” the chief said in a statement.

Lt. Scott Cherven, Mahwah traffic bureau supervisor, urged motorists not to try retaliating against another aggressive driver.

“What starts out as a motor vehicle violation can easily escalate in a very dangerous situation with the potential of very serious, if not dangerous outcome,” Cherven added in a statement.

Police urged witnesses to report aggressive driving to 9-1-1 and provide as much information as possible, including knowing your location.

Noah Cohen, NJ Advance Media, [email protected]

Cops: Mom dies in crash after brake lines cut

Kurt Bresswein For The Star-Ledger

A 38-year-old mother of five living in Scranton is dead following a car crash that police say was caused by her boyfriend cutting her brake lines, Pennsylvania State Police say.

John William Jenkins Jr., 39, cut the brake lines “in an attempt to obtain a metal pipe that could be used to smoke crack cocaine,” according to State Police at Dunmore in Lackawanna County.

Police charged Jenkins with homicide in the death of Tammy A. Fox, and he is being held without the possibility of bail.

Fox, a Jersey City native, was driving her black Hyundai Sonata about 10 a.m. Aug. 22 west on Pine Street in Scranton when “her vehicle began to accelerate,” police say in a news release.

The car crossed through the intersection of Pine Street and North Washington Avenue where it “violently struck a tree,” according to police.

Fox died of her injuries suffered in the crash.

“A mechanical inspection and search of Fox’s vehicle showed that the brake lines had been cut,” police said.

I very much recommend “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” on Amazon.

Good rating on Rotten Tomatoes and from other critics.

It is way more layered (nuanced?) than most films of the genre.

We get to see a lot about the “other side”, Muslim terrorists in this case.
How they got to be so hateful, how they live, even their children. The ways they can communicate and forward funds. (The actor who played his wife is really beautiful, btw.)

Jack doesn’t want to be a field agent. He’s “an analyst” he says, trying to stay in DC.

Wendell Pierce is terrific as Jack’s testy boss. He is a wonderful actor.
We watch meeting within the CIA and with the Prez.

THIS IS AN EXCITING MOVIE!

I didn’t quite watch all 8 episodes in one sitting, but was close.

Good casting, great production values (everything looks real), terrific and surprising plot twists, even a bit of science.

I really like this thing.

--

Reminder to watch (Netflix) Hannah Gadsby’s “Nannette”.

Nobody did a better job on stage in front of a mike than she did this year.

It’s extremely funny, provokes much thought and has some revealing and very dark moments.

It is brilliant.

Why is this site the only site in Gods creation you choose not to espouse your views?

I didnít say ďyouĒ see conspiracies everywhere, did I?

Michael, most ppl donít (re)introduce themselves with gratuitous insults. Even in Chicago.

It wasnít me who ďopened with an insultĒ, was it?

No, I post on only two sites, this being one of them.

No, I was not asked to do anything. I was thanked once, tho, for not taking the political bait. That was nice.

Trying proving your theory.

Donít worry, Mike, I write a lot of stuffÖall by myself. I dress myself too. (Apologies to ďA Walk in the WoodsĒ, Bill Bryson.)

So, hereís the sorry score so far:

Wrong about conspiracies.

Wrong about insults.

Wrong about where I post.

Wrong about my choice here.

Wrong about what I write.

So, my dear Michael, it seems that you are 0 for 5.

This gets old fast. You aren't up to it.

Start your own thread, please. I don't think anyone signed up for this junk.

Nobody here owns the threads they start. While there is nothing here IMHO that warrants the moderators take any action(s), I would ask that everyone disagree politely. Thanks.

San, I didn't ask for any help or action. Don't worry, I can politely insult people....

Tired of getting "robocalls"?

I use: https://www.nomorobo.com

with good success.

The Do Not Call list barely works, but this does.

As a serial donator, I still get calls from charities and political groups.

I tell them that:

I don't respond to phone calls and will/can check their sites.

Take me OFF their call lists.

I certainly wasn't asking for permission to post here or anywhere on this forum. I didn't wander here by happenstance, no matter how interesting you might think it is.

You seem to be over-reacting to a perceived slight that was never that in the first place. Itís not a flattering look and makes me question your suitability as a moderator.
