pondering about shipping scales

a digital shipping scale can cost over $100 easily depending on the weight it can hold... it'll have a separate lcd display... and most likely be flat so boxes and such...

now couldn't a digital bathroom scale do essentially the same thing? there are ones that have a separate lcd display so even if you had a box that covered the entire scale... you could still see the weight... and a normal bathroom scale can weigh over 250-300lbs... and at half the cost

what would the advantage/disadvantages be of using a bathroom scale over a shipping scale?

durability? cost? of course it would look funny to be using a bathroom scale...
