Rota Torques, what do you think? Lotus Elise wheel information desired.

I was advised by a Lotus specialist to change my wheels and tires to Rota Torques and Dunlap to get more miles out of my tires. I've been getting 4k-10k depending on whether I'm running 007s or 048s. I'm starting to do some research and I saw some previous threads on here where people love them and even had a group buy, and then I also found comments from some people that say they are knock offs and crack easily. I'm curious to hear from assertive, non track Lotus drivers that have Rota Torques for at least 15k miles, what real world experiences have been like for you. I don't mind buying the WORK Emotion CR Kai just to know that I'll be safe. But if it's really not an issue to have the Rotas then I'll go that route. Also, since this is the first time I'll be buying wheels for my 2005 Elise (touring package) I'm wondering what other information I need to know, especially if I'm ordering online (offset, lugs, etc.).

If it is not for the track, then why not just put different tires on your existing rims?

There are better rim choices than Rota when you ignore cost.

I don't know why not, lol. It's the recommendation that was made to me by the Lotus speciality shop. I was thinking about changing the aesthetics at the time of this conversation, not solely for better mileage. I'm thinking maybe I should just modify my stock ones the way I want. I just can't remember if I painted them black or had them powder coated. Guess I have some more research to do.

What tires would you recommend with the stock wheels for better mileage? When I worked for Lotus I was told not to put anything besides the Yokohama LTS ones on because they were specifically engineered taking in consideration how light the car is and that other tires could cause safety issues.

I have the rolling resistance of Khumo V70s and the aero resistance (somewhere).
And the rolling resistance is not very much.

The A08s seem to be the rage, but I doubt that there is a whole lot to be saved in economy in terms of gas mileage.
Probably more in terms of width as I have heard that the aero losses on wide tires is a lot, so a narrower tire will have a higher top speed and better economy.

Unless the aesthetics is a major issue for you, maybe just put on some standard sized A08s?
For an inexpensive rim the TeamDynamics are probably a safer choice than the Rotas. S2 Wheel Options - TechWiki

I have run the Rotas with Star Specs for at least the last 2 years and about 15k miles on the bumpy rough streets here in around Tulsa OK. They have been fine for me and only recently have I changed my rear tires due to a screw in a bad place that could not be patched. They were getting real close to needing to be changed anyway. The fronts still have plenty of tread. Guess I am hard on rear tires. LOL!

No matter where you drive your car or how you drive it, the weight of the wheels is (and stickiness of the tires) of paramount importance to the handling of your car. Your only concern should be the weight of the wheel/tire. The tires designed for this are lighter by a pound...any other tire will work...that is why there is a load rating for the tire.

The Lotus Cup wheels are tough to beat in weight...there are about 3 different styles in them. Sector's RS134s are pretty good too.

If your Lotus "Specialty Shop" is recommending Rota Torques, I'd find another shop. You don't need new wheels. You might need new tires. I put more value on grip and safety than miles derived from tires. Just me.

Rotas are heavy. Rotas base their design off other manufacturers. Say no to Rotas.

Get a really good alignment. I used to get 3000 miles out of my rears, (R888's) with just street driving.

After finding a great alignment guy, I got 6000 miles which includes 7 full track days thrown in on top of the road driving.

The guy I found is a racer, so he understands light cars and he is very n'th degree. First alignment took about 4 hours. I know, I waited on it and randomly walked back and watched.

Huge difference in how the car felt too. You should be able to say I drive in this manner and I expect the car to these things and the person should be able to set it up for that. If they cant or look confused, go someplace else.

Standard Lotus alignment stuff. Half tank of fuel. Tell them where your seating position is, they need to ballast for your weight

One other thing, the AD07 and 048 were cutting technology in 1994 when they were designed.

Tire tech has advanced.

I have two different sets of Rotas Slipstreams that I got from Blackwatch racing. They are heavier than forged wheels but have lasted me 40k+ miles on both street and track with no issues. I use a 15/16 set as my track wheels and a 16/17 set as my street wheels

I switched to Rota Torques and Dunlop Star Specs at the recommendation of my Lotus shop when my AD07s wore out. The reason was it was $200 more for the complete wheel and tire set than for a new set of AD07s (which are very expensive now).

They run this configuration on some of their track cars. Yes, they're a little heavy, but they're good value.

I would prefer sport package wheels over heavier aftermarket ones. Used sets come up from time to time at reasonable cost. Go with a cheaper tire more geared towards wear characteristics than handling if you wish, but the lighter forged sport pack wheels might help salvage the handling if you make that choice. Also, you have more choice in available tires if you go to the factory forged wheels. If you want all-season capability, you can get either Kumho or Continental from Tire Rack in the sport package size.

I don't track and I have Rota torques. I bought the car that way. I can't really say anything about mileage though. I've only put about 2000 miles on them. Everything seems good though.

I'm not sure where this information came from but it's not correct at all.

I had posted the weights of the Rota Torques vs stock wheels in another thread a while back but I can't seem to find it. I don't remember the exact weights, but the Rotas where within a lb or so of the stockers.

Now I'll agree they aren't the strongest wheel built, but neither are the stock wheels or many other aftermarket companies. As far as weight, a lb or two on a wheel isn't going to be noticeable to the average Joe.
