Showing off my radar detector-instead-of-mirror mod

One small part of my project this past summer was to replace the mirror in my Exige with my Escort Max360.

Spent a long time thinking I needed to remove the mirror nub for ideal placement. It wasn't budging so instead of fighting it I decided to join forces...

I took the mounting bracket from the Escort windshield mount and managed to install it inside the oem mirror stalk:

I just popped the mirror off, separated the mounting arm from the mirror, cut off the mounting arm ball, dremel'd out the inside of the arm to create a fork that snugly fit around the Escort bracket and voila. It took some finishing and sanding work to clean it up (not pictured yet) but it came out well.

I will see how the hinge holds up to bumps. It is textured on the inside surface but doesn't hold like the original bracket. I may need to add a pistol grip screw washer inside the hinge for more bite.

@Smoky - Ive mounted radar detectors up high in several vehicles, including one on a rear view mirror mount. I use a camera hotshoe on the detector and the mating piece on the vehicle.

Id be concerned your mount will tend to allow the close end of the detector to drop if you go over a hard bump. I always pick up the radar detector at its center of gravity. This reduces stress on the mount and also removes any tendency for the detector to rotate around its mounting.

Thanks for your thoughts. Like I mentioned I will be watching it. The addition of a little pistol grip washer will likely solve the problem should it occur.

Also, this is how the Escort mounts. There is no "center of gravity" mounting point like on a V1. While I agree it is not my personal first-choice as a design decision, admittedly I have run this detector for a while in other cars, and the Escort OEM mount is technically the same design. So far I have not had a problem with it staying put.
