arjay My understanding is that the pearl automatically switches off the rear view above 10 mph (for safety reasons I think they say) so no permanent rear vision it seems

Amazon Links

Intrigued I looked into the cheaper "iPhone Android iPad WIFI car backup camera" some more...

3.4 star reviews from Amazon. Most complaints are about the 1 second lag in image displayed, or refusing to connect whatsoever. Most customers seem satisfied with theirs. You can check all the reviews in this amazon link which sells this unit for $120 plus $10 shipping. If you decide to buy through Amazon, this is a better link (only 3 reviews which is why I didn't link it for checking out the reveiws) to use since it's cheaper ($114) and offers free/Prime shipping for those with Prime.

I thought about buying it, but then I noticed that there are several other wireless rear view camera offerings on Amazon for considerably less and I got lost/overwhelmed trying to sort out which ones had legit reviews/might be better so I'm giving up for now.

Use a small, cheap tablet for this instead. Walmart has the RCA on clearance for $25 today. Thought about picking one up for this but think I'll keep looking for one a higher quality screen with IPS (better viewing angles). Also would double as GPS which is nice... Often have problems with the touch interface of my Garmin GPS units.

100% agree.

exigegus my issue was narrow angle cameras

for a always on rear camera, one needs a narrow field of view so that objects more than 2 feet away are not tiny dots.

It is disappointing that high def cameras and displays are not common, but this was the big sticking point in my view[hah]

[edit] so I banged out a quick post on my rearview setup.

I had to dig in the support section to find that - don't understand why it's not just listed on the product page (as opposed to the huge video). Hell, even Apple (kings of "the user shouldn't worry about the details - it should just work") does that.

Not necessarily vaporware - there is some press about it:

Pearl Announces RearVision: World?s Most Advanced Automotive Backup Camera | Business Wire

That said, there appears to be an abundance of "leveraging competitive synergies across near-market verticals" kind of speak in contrast to zero specific details (like how this thing is powered - my guess is that thick section on the bottom is a battery casing) so I'm not hopeful. I'm also not a big fan of "yet-another-expensive-smartphone-accessory"

I'm getting some work done on my car, and I think I want to install an always-on rear camera, but I'm a little disappointed to find that most of the solutions are stuck in like 2004. There's literally not a single 1080p display single-din head unit that I can find anywhere. The same can be said of the cameras themselves - all of them seem to be low-def cameras (480p and below).

It's really disheartening because you can find 4in 1080p touch panels for like $15 on Aliexpress. You would think that some car stereo company would just stick a tablet chipset in a single-DIN unit do a little audio integration and call it a day, but there's basically nothing out there.

Therein lies the rub, haha

I have been meaning to get up with you about 3D printing a tablet mount. I'll shoot you a message soon so it doesn't derail here

TransForged Good find, looking into it now. This with our custom smartphone mount would be a nice combination.
