Ohhh, I've been meaning to pick one of these up as a project...

How much are these things worth? (Sorry, I ask because I have no idea and I haven't taken the several minutes to actually google it :facepalm)

do you know if the mileage stays with the cluster or are they displayed differently depending on ECU?
Mileage stays with the cluster as far as I know. I had 2 replaced at the dealer on my '05 Elise and one actually came with some miles already on it! They couldn't change either one to match my actual mileage.

Yes, mileage comes with the cluster.

There's an undocumented way to reset the '08+ mileage via CAN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfUGh0GvPNM

I'd imagine that if nothing else the '05 and '06-'07 mileage could be reset using BDM and a bit of reverse engineering, but AFAIK the dealer can't do it and nobody else has bothered.

P.S. if you look up the cluster pin-out and apply power to the power pins, no need for an '05 car to just fetch the mileage.
