What's the limiting factor for top speed; engine, gearing, aerodynamics?

I bought the car for cornering but it would be nice to get a little more on top. Reason i'm asking, had an SUV (i guess a SRT) pass me at 150ish. It's not a huge deal but would be nice to get another 10mph without major mods...

What type of Lotus do you have...Elise, Elise S/C, Exige S220 or Exige S240? Maybe someone more qualified can answer that but, I don't thinks there's a minor mod you can do that will give you an additional 10 hp without spending at least $5K?

Lose weight (seriously).

You and the car.

Lose the radio, lose the air conditioning. :D

I'm no physicist but I don't think that's a limiting factor of top speed, just acceleration.

Engine power and aerodynamics are key here.

I'm not sure how many ways there are to make it more aerodynamically efficient...Maybe a no-cut-out diffuser and a different muffler, hard top, lower the car...all those will help, but definitely won't add 10mph.

More power is really what will do it for you. Go S/C! :D

Why the hell would you be driving 140 mph on a public road and then come here to complain about being passed by a SUV going 150.

You are not going to see 160 unless you have at least 300 hp; simple as that. Anyway, I wouldn't fret over getting passed by an SUV at 150 mph; that was one crazy SOB.

Lose weight...and race downhill!

But why would you want to go faster than 140 in a Lotus unless you're on a track?

is it just me... or anyone else think 100mph on a public road in a lotus feels like 300mph... I mean there has been a few times where I've stretched the legs to 90mph on an open freeway and thought... I'm fine with nothing more than 99 mph... its WAY to bumpy here in michigan and on top of that there is no thrill in a lotus doing those type of speeds compared to going like 20-25 mph on some tail of the dragon turns ;)

just me at least...

It's an Elise w/sport pack
CosmosMpower - not complaining, just curious. Being passed by a SUV at those speeds made me wonder if i could get a little more out of the car. Could care less about being passed by a SUV.. it's a SUV..lol

I'm probably gona get the SC next year : -> (even though the top end is still the same i think)

LMAO.... I know whoever was driving that SRT8 Grand Cherokee (more than likely what it was) was laughing all the way home.

I hope you and the SRT are not in CA. Because doing 140MPH is very dangerous to the other drivers on the public road.

Take the car to a track.

I don't want my insurance going up because other Elise driver starts to do crazy things like speed seeking teenagers.

We are aero drag limited. You need more power to overcome the drag.

Yep....it's drag limited. the c/d is not good in this car.... ( about .47-.49 I think )

Your going to have to move off the planet if you think people arent going to speed sometimes in fast cars. If someone buys a shelby over an escort chances are they will occasionally speed. And although there are plenty of idiot drivers who just drive stupid even through traffic, alot of people (including you more than likely) have put your foot down when you got a crazy stretch of road to yourself. Its just funny how its supposably so many "saints" on there has never done more than 5 over.

Personally, I've got no problem with SHORT BURSTS north of 130 or so, on WIDE OPEN - no other traffic HWY's. However, "cruising" at 140+/-? :panic: :thwack:

If I'm rollin, at anywhere even near triple-digits, and I see somethin' (don't care what/who it is ...cop, little ol' lady, ricer - ANYONE/ANYTHING) coming up in my rearview, instead of getting ON it, I'm getting OFF!

WTF does ANYONE want with "road racing"/raging anyway? (again: :thwack:)
Seems strictly LOW-BUDGET/Ghetto to me to even wanna do, entirely.

Not only just totally irresponsible, but totally AGAINST what these cars are made for, in the 1st place. You think maybe Mr/Mrs rice-rocketing their SUV might have pushed it >150 ONLY to "show you up"/egg you on/see what you could/would do? Possiblility? Then why in the world would you even STOOP to that level? Let alone yet even further apparently WANT to "up that ante"?? -eek- That makes no sense.

Best to let them (and ANYONE) just go. Chances are, they really have NO CLUE what your car can and can't do anyway. ...And why should you even bother? I guess I just don't get it.

THEY have no clue. But when you stoop to this, instead it is obvious that YOU don't. :(
OK - Last Line retracted, based upon subsequent post/clarification made by OP now on page 2. LOL/OUCH! Getting passed-by, by an SUV ON THE TRACK :wallbang: ...Yeah, that too, would probably get my ire going as well.

Good luck in 'fixing" that! ;)

JMO/YMMV.

Cheers,
-Grant
