1st test drive

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I finally saw an Elise today and I have to say that it's even better in person. Went for a long test drive and had a chance to get it to 110 on the highway, this car is rock solid at that speed. The motor gives a good punch once you pass 6000 rpms. I'm officially on the waiting list.

damn, every demo is ST! Maybe everyone's car is going to be ST. what the hell happened to the color!

Seems like everyone is saying "to hell with the break-in!" And yes, I was hoping my color would be more exclusive that it is becoming! My guess is that SY will still be the volume leader.

Well, my dealer said this was their demo car and not for resale.
He said it's ok to punch it, and I did.

Of course I wouldn't do that to MY car before the breakin Period is completed.

Another "criminal" rpm offender.

{By the way, I agree with you Chris. If this is the way people intend to treat the demos, I can understand a dealer being reluctant to offer test drives}

Has the dealer got rocks in his head. He'll be the one screaming bloody murder when it fries at 5000 miles. Nnot blaming you Dave T but for your dealer to say something that irresponsible is crazy, that car WILL be sold eventually to some lucky(?) individual.

I did hit a hundred a couple times but in 6th gear at 5000 rpms,

Can't guarantee I wouldn't have done the same with dealer consent! Dealer's fault, but they probably don't care. Nice cab btw (with wood kit, it seems). How did it feel after you drove the Elise?

My CAB felt like my Lexus after driving the Elise. In the Elise, you are always on the edge. Can't wait till my turn is up.

Will the engine really die after 5K miles if break-in is ignored, or will overall engine life be compromised, and/or the engine won't reach its full performance potential? I thought short bursts into the high cam profile was part of break-in after, what, 500 miles?

I'm kind of paralleling Randy's post on another thread, but if someone's buying the Elise for the performance, driving under 4,000 rpm is not going to tell you anything about the power delivery.

I've always been under the impression that demo cars are built exactly for that. Hence, they're usually priced lower when sold. When buying a demo car, the buyer knows that car has been agressively driven BUT not abused.

I'd make a distinction between a quick rev to redline versus 7,000 rpm clutch drops and burn outs.

they call em demos for a reason. and i do not believe the engine will fry. hell, even in the lowly spyder with an engine given to a few issues there are people who paid no heed to break in- with no problems

It is a controversial subject. I hope they change the oil quickly if they're allowing people to use all of the rev range.

two words people....

Toyota Motor!

This is not some Rover, low revving, work horse.

Read the ricer boards, kids try to kill these things every day, have for years, and it's tough, rock solid.

I've driven with the Supra clubs and people do awful things to these different toyota powerplants and they just keep on ..... keeping on!

let them warm up a couple of minutes before you hammer them, Change the oil, rev the hell outta them, and they'll smile.

Of course I'll selectively pamper mine for the first 500 or so?

But I'm still wanting 7000rpm's like a fat kid wants cake!
