The only 330's I've seen run in STS were sedans. The Coupe is legal right?

My friend is tiring of trying to hunt down a G35 Coupe and now is looking at a 330CI manual with sport package.

He was wondering what the best autocross option would be, I gave the options as:

1. Buy Falkens in 245 or 225/245 on the stock 17x7.5/8.5 rims. Store the OEM tires til you tire of playing or buy a second set of wheels and run Falkens all the time. STK2 as a DS'r.

2. Come as is and run STK2 as a DS'r.

3. Buy a set of 17x7 rims and some 225 Falkens. Run STS.

What do you think??? What would you tell him to do???

BMW has stacked on their cards in electronic traction control these days (actually for some time now).

You have to have an M car to get LSD. It isn't even an option on a 3 series.

SUCKS

And I had to spend 20 minutes tonight convincing my numb nutted friend that the factory traction control wasn't the fastest way to launch a car or drive an autox course. He still doesn't believe me. He thinks the fastest possible tires must be what BMW chose in their infinite wisdom. And he can't possibly react better than the computer..... In his case... That may be true. How can anybody has car crazy as Jim is be this f'ing clueless about cars? His closest friend in Jim Swindell the CART Starter. He's been following racing forever. He is a non-stop walking encyclopedia of motorsports knowledge. But he is the biggest dimwit when it comes to street car performance, driving, tires, or Autox.....

Has he tried an internet or other broker? That's what I should have done.:(

No 330's come with LSD's. They all have traction control instead. Other than the M3s, the last 3-series with a LSD were the E36 325's.

If he plans to run stock class, the Sport Package is the thing to get. With the coupe, you can even get 18" rims, and the rears are 18 x 9.

If he's going to run STS, no reason why he can't run 7.5" rims.

Until he gets hooked, he should just run the stock tires in SK2/DS. Although those stock tires aren't cheap, especially if he goes with the 18" wheel package (rear 255/35-18).

I steered him away from teh 18" wheels because the tires are so expensive.

He found two 330ci manuals with a sport package.
Blue with cold weather package
Silver with Xenon headlights

He doesn't ski, so he's probably going to do the Silver car.

I tried to get him to go through a broker or internet. The internet thing is how I got the trep so cheap. But he doens't listen to me. He still might buy a G35 on Thursday in Vegas where his family is. He's talking to a dealer there. If not, then the silver car most likely on Fri or Sat as his car is do back on Sat.

He can run 7.5" in STS??? Is that legal, or simply, nobody locally is going to care? Would a bone stock 330ci manual with 225 Falken Azenis be a total embarrassment in STS??? Lets say Avard was driving it how would you do???

Also the stock wheels with the sport package are 17x7.5 in front and 17x8.5 rear. Tires are 225 front and 245 rear. I like them too, they are the M Double Spokes.

I know the wheel size of the Sport Package. Plus, you mentioned it in your first post.

And STS rules allow 7.5" wheels to go with the 225 tires.

How would a 330i do? Last year, Dan Maloney put megabucks into an STS 330i...full coil-overs on megabuck shocks. Everything you could do under the rules. And Stacy Reitmeir drove it at Hollywood Park that August. It took Dan 4 runs to beat Will's STS-winning time and Stacy was only 0.5sec faster on the fastest of her 6 runs. And that was before Will got his new suspension.

Why did they put all that effort and money into a four door?

Wouldn't the coupe be a little quicker?
So, Steve, he didn't bother to contact the Nissan NA people my colleague provided names and e-mail adresses for?

That's even more dimwitted than not knowing that F1 launch control isn't the same as street car traction control.

The main reason people run the coupe in stock class is the availability (now) of those 18 x 9 rear wheels (makes up for not having an LSD...somewhat). But as far as quicker...it's not much lighter or stiffer (all coupes have those big doors and a fold-down rear seat). And modifying it for STS, suspension is the same.

If they REALLY built the car to the extent of the rules, they probably should have started with a non-sunroof, non-optioned coupe, and replaced the stock power seat with something a little lighter, but without an LSD and with only 225 street tires, it was always just an overweight car with more power than it could use. The exception was its debut at the San Diego National Tour in 2001. That course, with its numerous long straights after hairpin turns, with the longest uphill, was just the type of course where the BMW could make use of its power. He had everyone by 2 secs (on a 90 sec course) (I think Curt Ormiston hit 90mph several times in the Ferrari... I know he spent a lot of time in 3rd, and 2nd was good for 68mph. Cool hearing the computer blip the throttle for downshifts.:) ).

He's not an autocrosser, but.... He wants something that has a place to play. Like any newbie I try to explain that he's going to get killed in whatever he drives. A 2003 Z06 isn't going to make him that much more competitive. He sucks, and he will never get better because he won't listen to anybody else and he has f'd up ideas about how cars work.

Since he is too damn lazy to ever change tires at a race, and he thinks he'd like to go to national events.... I figured STS is the class he could be the less embarrassed in and could run with the least effort.

If he ran stock class and wanted race tires, he could always get aftermarket 18" wheels for his race set. But I was thinking the 17's would be better because he can get Azenis instead of $450 a piece tires. Don't laugh. He replaced his MCoupe tire with Dunflop 8080 tires from Germany through his dealer. $450 a piece. I somehow managed to convince him that the Azenis are "better". BTW-THose Dunflops were the worst. They took a good tire and gave it a seriously fd up compound. Instant grease. But they lasted 41,000 miles and several autocrosses and drag sessions. They all corded... And he's been driving on it that way for a year... Because he didn't want to pay for new tires (at $1800 a set). Yo... Jim??? Slap a set of Kumho 712's on it??? Azenis??? Oh well....

Actually, you should tell him that the car is classed in Super Stock which gives him an out 'cause the other cars are so much more powerful and have larger tires.

STS would be the exact wrong thing when he gets obliterated by Escorts, Proteges, Sentras, and the odd 240 :^)

When he started in 2000 he was in SS with the MCoupe. Drove him nuts and he got discouraged and quit (except for Buttonwillow) because he considered the MCoupe vastly superior to Corvettes.....

He also said they all cheat. He believes that cars in stock should be as delivered from the showroom floor including OEM tires, shocks, air filter, muffler, AND alignment specs. He got angry at people for prepping their cars to the class....

Okay, why am I wasting time on this...... Now atleast he's coming around some. Just don't tell Julie or Kimberly or Allyson or... what he said last year at Buttonwillow. On Sunday, he didn't finish last in STK1, he beat Lori Woodward. I pointed out that she has a lot of experience and runs national events. "She's a girl, that doesn't count" and he sulked all the way home....
