I have been noticing that my car will have clutch chatter really bad at some lights when taking off from the light. For anyone that doesn't know, basically it feels like the whole car is shuttering and has bad wheel hop.

I just read that it may be due to the car sitting for too long and irregularities is the clutch surface that should go away after a couple launches, which is the case for me. My car will sometimes sit for a week or so. They also said to try slipping the clutch to smooth out the surface.

Not on my Lotus, but I've had a car whose clutch would chatter if the clutch lining was glazed from an episode of excessive slipping. Dumping the clutch hard with moderate power a few times would usually bust the glaze off and restore normal operation.

I had horrible clutch chatter with a fidanza clutch. Turns out it was installed incorrectly, and it was carving into the aluminum outer casing. Went back to stock clutch, and it works perfectly.

I have ACT HDSS and fidazna flywheel and it chatters also. Not sure how many miles it's been since new...maybe 500. have to check.

Only happens when I try to feather the clutch (have the car crawl forward slowly). Like when I park the car in the garage. I think it's the clutch that smells as it slipping. Don't really like it. hoping it goes away after 1000 miles.

Stop and go doesn't happen since I drop the clutch quickly and the car jumps forward.

Hmmm, Another fidanza with clutch chatter. This makes me think, again, that the fidanza clutch is not 100% compatible with lotus. Shay2nak, you may want to investigate, as my transmission was damaged by a chattering fidanza clutch. To Heavyweight : Lotus of scottsdale installed the fidanza clutch.

FWIW, a fellow lotus and I also have the ACT HDSS clutch and it chatters at low rpm crawl. I've naturally changed my driving behavior so that RPMs do not dip below 1k to avoid damaging my teeth and embarassment. The chatter gets a bit better after several hundred miles but doesn't seem to go away completely.

I have a stock flywheel and my friend had a lightened flywheel. My stock clutch worked great even with the VF2 supercharger. Ive not heard of anyone slipping the stock clutch w/ the VF2. The stock clutch is easier on the left calf, smoother, and cheaper. IMO, the HDSS is only necessary for 300+whp setups (TVS400, etc) or those who need to work out their left leg for one reason or another :p.

I would have kept the stock clutch if I were to do it again. Too bad it's not an easy install. On a side note, I changed to the taller 6th gear from MWR and it made a great difference in sound and feel due to the ~500rpm drop on the highway. Gas mileage supposedly also improves by almost 1mpg highway, not to mention the higher top-end speed potential.

The ACT HD SS that I just installed also makes the car shudder if I let it out slowly and without using much throttle if I'm just trying to inch forward or backwards. It's ok if I raise the RPMs up a little and then let the clutch out.

I've put about 400mi on the car since changing the clutch, however the vast majority of that has just been highway-type driving without having to use the clutch.

After reading about clutch installations in general, I'm terrified that maybe I bent the friction disc while installing the transmission. While I did use a transmission jack to lift the trans up into the car, I can't say for sure that the trans was never being supported by the clutch disc. I tried to avoid that though because I know it's not great for the clutch.

So do you guys think I can still expect this to go away on its own, or is it a characteristic of the clutch and/or from improper installation?

I can't echo what many other people have been saying about the chatter. I have an ACT XT/SS on my 05 Elise and it does chatter quite a bit if I don't give it enough gas.

I've also seen this with other cars that I've put ACT pressure plates in.

All I can say is, learn what the car needs and adjust.
