In John Lennon's 1967 piece "Day in the Life"

"He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed....."

What kind of car was in the song?

The beginning was based on 2 stories John Lennon read in the paper: Guinness heir Tara Browne dying when he smashed his Lotus into a parked van, and an article in the UK Daily Express in early 1967 which told of how the Blackburn Roads Surveyor had counted 4000 holes in the roads of Blackburn and commented that the volume of material needed to fill them in was enough to fill the Albert Hall.

Can anyone elaborate?

During the Beatles Anthology that aired a few years back on television, they did a video to go with the music. The car shown wrecked during this part of the song was a Lotus Elan with the bonnet popped open. Kind of bears this version out:

I am positive that it was a Lotus Elan owned by the Guiness heir who was a friend of one of the Beatles. I think it was George Harrisons friend. This was a trivia question on one of the Lotus LTD Road Rallys

However, the song gives the impression that he shot himself in the car, but I think he crashed it to commit suicide.

Here is a picture of the car after the accident

The video "free as a bird" makes reference to the accident at 2:26

Hendrix also had an Elan

Without reading the rest of the answers - it was a Lotus Elan. It's referring to some celebrity/politician that was killed in a wreck in his Elan.
