I thought the information about the source for much of the spamming and hacking coming from phantom locations was particularly interesting.
This mapping of the internet reminds me of the guys using blue boxes to map the phone system.

This explains part of what is going on with the webnet.
It doesn't explain what is going on. It just explains that they're trying to monitor what is going on.

I know the research is just beginning, but they have traced large amounts of spam and hack attempts to areas that appear and disappear rapidly, presumably by design.

In general use, many people think they are mistaken when they lose email, or that people just aren't responding.
In some very rapid email correspondence with someone, I became aware that a certain percentage of email was vanishing on a routine basis.
We became aware of strange gaps in the conversation and confirmed it by resending.
It's helpful to know how often someone may have simply not received mail.

I can't believe no one has done this monitoring and research before.
