Well my thottle cable broke! I was almost cresting a hill as I felt the pedal get notchy, grabby and then pluck. Sounded like someone was plucking a bad guitar string. Luckily I had enough momentum so I could still coast up and turn right onto a neighborhood street. Upon examining the cable it looks frayed. It seems as though it had been rubbing on some other sharp metal edge. Not sure what though. It could have been the metal ferrel from the housing that caused this.

It all makes sense now. I recall finding some tiny white plastic fragments in the floorboard several weeks ago. The cable must have started to fray enough that the ends of each strand gouged the inner liner of the cable housing.

So does anyone have an Elise I can borrow this weekend? I'm missing out on some great driving weather. :(

Sorry this pic isn't closer snapshot of the cable, but you get the idea.

I'm getting mine replaced next week -- it's starting to bind/stick.

Have you been putting your foot to the floor? If so, stop doing that as it may cause things to prematurely wear out. Yes, I'm kidding around here.

Sorry to hear that. Are you still coming to the mini-drive tonight? We might be able to get your car running with a simple cable-joiner from Home Depot. Give me a shout.

I had the throttle cable break on my old Esprit once - on the upper deck of 183. I used my awesome Mac Gyver skills to repair it with a paper clip - no joke! It ran great (for 100 feet until the paper clip broke.)

That's funny. Paper clip. rotfl

It probably could have been joined with a cable joiner but since the break happened further down the sleeve you'd have to let out a lot of slack at the cable adjuster. I don't think it could provide enough slack to compensate. Plus fishing for the cable in the sleeve would be PITA and I would have to cut into the housing and then worry if Lotus would warranty it since I futz with to repair it, etc. Too much effort for a "quick fix" I already towed the car to Autostrada this morning.

My sis is coming up from Houston so I might not be able to make it. If I do I go I'll bring the awesome Golf. Wanna race? :D
