I'm looking at buying an elise this summer. The '05's are now in my price range (low 30's). But I have size 13's and hear that the '06 pedals will work much better. And I like the idea of LED tail lights.

The '06 models are still high 30's-low 40's. Can I buy a set of pedals and tail lights and do the upgrade myself? What else am I losing from not going with an '06 off the bat?

(I tried the search feature, but no luck)

The '06 has a completely different car computer, and is drive-by-wire rather than mechanical linkage to the throttle body. Changing the tail lights (and other minor things like the ProBax seats) won't be difficult, but I don't think I'd try to swap the pedals out of an '05 given that the throttle assembly is completely different.

Good luck,

John

Ahhhh... drive by wire would be the issue there. I'm more concerned with the spacing from brake pedal to the center divider for my sized 13 shoes. I've read all the threads on that topic. I'll either have to wear driving shoes or move the center divider (or remove it).

I'm wondering if the 2006 is worth the extra $5,000+...

Just adjust the 05 pedals. I think you can go to sector111 for pedal options too. I think the half circle lights on the 05 are way better looking.

I'd keep looking for an '06... not sure where you are getting your pricing info from, but I just got an '06 with about 8500 miles for well under $35k. The '06 models have definitely come down in price within the last year, and I regularly see them in the mid 30's. I would have gotten one sooner in fact if I wasn't looking for a very specific color combination.

I too once thought about getting an 05' and updating it to '06, but I came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the hassle and the money. It was far easier and cheaper to just wait till the right used '06 popped up.

Also, remember that an '06 will probably still have some of the factory warranty left on it, whereas an '05's will likely have expired.

I pretty much only wear "driving" shoes now. I'm a size 12-13 (depending on the brand). I have had good luck with Puma Speedcats and some various Diesel brand shoes....the Diesels are really comfy.

I leaned more towards an 06 just because overall they got some teething issues out of the way. Things like you mentioned like the tails, the pedals and of course the A/C sensor.

Is there a thread with a master list of 2005 > 2006 changes?

Difficult thing to search for.
There are many threads covering this, but to sum up:

'06 is drive by wire.
'06 offers traction control and LSD as options. Now, '05's can be reflashed and harnessed for traction control. LSD is also an option from Lotus Sport.
'06 has LED taillights, so no reflectors on rear panels, also, rear panels have different shape (ovular vs. circular) ventilation holes.
'06 has the more comfortable Probax seat. Now available as a retrofit from Lotus Sport on '05's
'06 has optional cupholder
'06 has slightly different instrument cluster.
'06 has daytime running lights
'06 has different color options. GG and STI slightly darker shades.

Here's a good summary:

FWIW, I had an 05 Elise. Pedals set up was not good for heel and toe. I also had a fuel starvation problem in high g left handers. Moved to an 06 Exige. Pedals great, seats are more comfortable and no fuel starvation. No teething problems with the 06. Something you may want to consider.

The '05 pedals have a range of adjustments though. I took a half hour and have them perfect for heel-and-toe under hard braking.

My 06 Exige didn't have daytime running lights.

And LSD was an option at the very end of the 05 MY run.

If you're not tracking the car, it won't matter. Get an '05 and forget about it all. You'll be very happy.

I have wide size 13 feet and after adjusting the break and gas pedals, which is very easy on the '05, they work great for heal-toe. On the track with thin soled street shoes or driving shoes it is great, and I have never had better. On the street though the downside is that if I wear hiking or other athletic shoes or any shoe where the sole protrudes out the sides at all, it pretty much sucks for the right foot. I have to drive using the outside edge of my foot to hit the gas without snagging the break pedal, and if I'm going for a while in any of the offending shoes I will sometimes take off the right one.

The solution would be to take out or somehow thin the divider between the driver and passenger foot wells, or remove the dead pedal and shift the clutch and break pedals to the left. I have not driven an '06 but I don't see how changing the pedals would help without slimming/erasing the dead pedal or slimming the foot well divider as the problem, at least for me, is with the total lateral distance not being enough.

There are some that prefer the 2005. I'd say there might be a higher collection-value as a Fed Year-One version years from now with the unusual setup compared to 06-08.
