If there was no Fed Elise .. which of the following popular performance oriented, mass produced convertibles would you choose for that sunny day in the mountains:

[1] new solstice $20K

[2] Miata mazdaspeed $25K

[3] Toyota Mr2 $25k

Over 30K

[4] Honda S2000 $32K

[5] BMW Z4 3.0 $41K

[6] Corvette C5 or C6? $50K

Without the Elise, I'd be targeting the new 911 or Boxster due to come out later this year.

I don't own one, but I tried one out and at 6' 1", it was way too small. Too bad, it looks like a nice car and a good value.

EDIT: Interesting how my reply precedes the post I was responding to?

I've been tempted by the Miata for a long time, but kept hoping the Elise would make it over here. Bang for the buck, the MS Miata is a great deal:

I was also looking at used Boxsters since they have come down to earth in their prices. My short test drive was great, but then the Elise was announced and I figure it is worth the extra money.

The upcoming Box coupe might be worth it down the road though.

gold chains optional on the Z4?

I'd wait for the M version of the Z4 that's not being made
being armenian, i will take the gold chains! LOL! I've always been a huge BMW fan so I would wait for the M roadster. I've seen some spy pics of it.

Sorry .. my bad.. I'm not a mod, so I can't edit that out sorry. I guess I'm just passing on a stereotype carried over from my Audi / VW background. e.g. A4 vs BMW 330 commercial with both drivers in the driveway, with the later looking into the vanity mirror. Despite the Bangle bashing, I do like its looks.

The Z4 to Boxster comparisons I've read peg the Z4 as having a great motor but less than stellar handling and feel. Anyone drive a Z4 care to comment?

Opps, I forgot to add the Audi 3.2 DSG TT. O well that car can't be had in a true manual yet anyway.

My pick was a no brainer. If the Elise wasn't coming over, I'd be more than happy with my current car. I love my S.

The Soltice might be interesting but it's not in production yet, so who knows how it will look or what its stats will be by the time it actually hits the showroom (if it does at all).

As far as Miata and size goes, I've driven a Miata & I'm 6'5". It wasn't horribly uncomfortable. That said, I fold up pretty well & haven't had much problem getting into any car other than the mid 80's Escort GT and an MG Midget.

Also consider an NSX-T - a buddy of mine just bought a gorgeous black '91 (with suspension, wheels, etc) for something close to mid $20K. Not bad.

6' 2" here, about 215 lbs, and I fit pretty well in the Miata. (I have a 2001 w/ sport susp that I picked up in January, partly to test out whether I could live with a car this small in anticipation of the arrival of my Elise) The only gripe I have is that I have size 13 feet, and I can't fit my foot between the clutch pedal and the left wall of the footwell, so I have to slide it _under_ the clutch pedal to get it onto the dead pedal.

I wish I'd picked up a Miata a long time ago! Unbelievably fun, reliable, and cheap- I'm really enjoying it, and even though I'm anxious to replace it with an Elise, I will still be sad to see it go.

I've had BMWs and Porsches, and the Miata is a tinny little buzzbomb in comparison, but if you enjoy driving a little gokart (I do!) then that's pretty much what you _want_ isn't it? :D

I voted S2000.... Just because I'd probably take it over the other cars listed. Wouldn't be my first choice, though... I've been driving one for 3 years now...
