I have a 2005 Elise, pretty much stock.

There is a rather loud cymbal sound coming from the back on the drivers side. It seems to sound only when the throttle is out and the clutch is not engaged. It's especially loud at slow speed, for example down a gentle hill in 2nd. I can stop it by gentle throttle, then if I left, it's back. I also hear it when upshifting when the input and output shafts are at equal speed (just before I clutch and shift).

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
John

I think we found the source. Now I need to figure out what to do with it.

The sound comes from the exhaust pipe tips. I'm told it's a JanSpeed exhaust.

We could reproduce the sound in the garage, then wedge them apart a bit and the sound would stop. (see images).

Anyone got an idea on the best way to fix this?

If the tips are not touching the problem might be the baffle inside (with the many holes) may have rusted and come lose, you may want to use Exhaust putty to keep the baffle from vibrating against the inner tip causing the sound until the life of the muffler is over and replace.
