brace yourself my wife read in todays paper that a lambo is not an economical vehicle. it appears that the mucielago gallardo and yes the mucielago (automatic) finished 2,3, and 5 on the least fuel efficient list. as she said "damn and i was just getting ready to buy one of those just to run around in and doing some car poolin"

Yep,they add something like $6K gas guzzler penalty to the price of the car, it's on the window sticker.

Forget it then I was headed out to get one for my commuting, but I guess I will be a hybrid instead. Man that is surprising news, they are not economy cars, damn.

Just curious, are SUVs exempt from the gas guzzler tax since they're not passenger cars?

Different CAFE requirements for cars and trucks see:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/cafe/overview.htm

Gas guzzler penalty only applies to cars.

Different crash requirements for trucks.

Different tariff structure for imported cars vs. imported trucks.

You get the idea. The question is, what qualifies as a truck? According to the EPA, 8500 pounds GVW (meaning fully loaded capacity including towed vehicle) is a truck, but that does not necessarily apply for crash requirements and tax purposes.

Yes.

See, it's like this.. they're only cars when it benefits the driver.

They are CARS when:
- Driving on residential streets or bridges with weight limits (EXEMPT!)
- Paying a toll at the bridge (cheaper to be a carl)
- Being licensed to drive (no commercial license required)

They are TRUCKS when:
- Avoiding the gas guzzler tax. (8mpg? No problem. Enjoy)
- Qualifying for America Thanks You tax bonuses (Farm Equipment)
- Exempt from bumper-height requirements
- Unique tax/terriff structure for manufacture/import
- Headlight height suitable for road use
- Crash-worthiness and handling safety

Did I miss anything?

Ground Loop, you forgot that they have much more lenient emissions requirements. Otherwise, spot on.
