Was your friend able to tap the CAN bus from the stock EFI ECU? The MoTeC user manual just says that it can be connected to all MoTeC engine management systems (no surprise there) and some other manufacturers' ECUs either via CAN, RS232 or OBD-II. CAN would give the best data rate, but how "standard" is CAN?
This is a Motec unit. It is great stuff. Check the price, before you get too excited.
MXL is less expensive at about $2k. Somebody put it on their Honda conversion. All of them are CAN bus, so can plug into stock ECU. That does not mean it is plug-an-play, since the channel definitions may need to be set-up. also, if it does not have proper odometer, left-right turn signal indicators, etc., it may not be DOT legal...
There is a bunch of these colored LCD screens coming out, tablet technology, re-packaged. I am sure LCD is a direct-sunlight unit, vs. what is used in the tablets.
