I recently purchased a new key Fob - the car only came with one Fob from the previous owner.
In the process of learning how to program the new Fob - I cam across this page - http://gglotus.org/ggtech/elise-alarm/elise-alarm.htm

By following the procedure for "Immobilizer Active Arming" - you no longer need to carry the key fob to start the car. Simply get in, turn the key, and press the start button. If you want to lock the car you have to use the key in the door.
It also saves your battery since the immobilizer / alarm are not activated - no more flashing red light on the tach.
Now I have 2 key fobs programmed that I don't use. :facepalm
