I do do it (although it has been a while) as a navigator:D I also make a portion of my living as a rally photographer. You can see my photos from the Corona Rally Mexico WRC at www.subaru.net

I still would like to rally! All the drifting is so exhilarating. Hmmm maybe if we moved some of those trees to the side things will get safer.

I have seen your work in the photography thread, you are really good. I am just now picking up photography as a hobby but i want to get more serious about and take some classes.

Just wanted to say hi. My s/n on nasioc is jslegacy, I have a few pics posted over there but not much.

OK here is a rally video where they don't crash (as much)

It's big 10 minutes long

Finland 2003
Small world. The guy that put that together (GuidoThePenguin) is from the Cougar board I spend a bit of time on. He's got a whole bunch of others he put together from the 2002 season.

Edit: the links to most of his videos are dead now, but here's two more that still work.

Monte Carlo 2002

Finland 2002 (Other Footage)

Modern,

Wow Nice clip. I rank the Rally drivers as the best drivers in the world period!!!!!

Thanks again,
Mitch
I tend to agree but after watching Jeff Gordon (NASCAR), Jimmy Johnson (NASCAR), and Collin Edwards (World Super Bike Champ) win the 2002 RACE of CHAMPIONS Nations Cup on the Canary Islands, I have to say that I reassesed my judgement of NASCAR drivers and how they rank among WRC drivers or actually all drivers. The ROC was a WRC side by side race course and these guys drove against WRC specialists like Sebastian Loeb, Renato Travaglia and Jesus Puras and other drivers of different discipline in a round robin format. These guys really beat the rally drivers on their on their own turf. Colin Edwards can rally? Yup! They were kick butt! I guess that dirt track experience helps.

I know I'm simplifying this but I think if you are an exceptional driver/rider with exceptional fundmental skills and reaction, then you can drive any course and be very competitive.

I agree to some degree. There is no doubt that some of those NASCAR and Motorcross guys have good car control skills and mechanical sympathy. In the US rally series, Motorcross star Travis Pastrana has taken up rally and he seems to show some promise. Didn't a NASCAR driver almost win at Daytona?
But keep in mind that the Race of Champions is a race course not a stage road and the drivers can learn the course and adapt to it. Also the conditions of the course don't change. Furthermore they can push the car beyond their limits (or talent) with little fear of going off into the trees.

Put them on a real stage road, where they don't know what is around the next bend except for what they were told by their co-driver, the surface constantly changes as well as the radius of the corners and it may be a different story.

A few months ago, Petter Solberg (current world champion and Subaru driver), took Michael Schumacher for a ride. Apparently Michael said Petter was nuts!

Also Colin McRae has competed in Britains version of NASCAR and did very well. Rumor also has it McRae is looking at competing at LeMans in a Ferrari.

And wasn't Jeff Gordon a sprint car racer before Nascar. That would definitely qualify as valuable previous experience. I think the car control and nerve of rally drivers is second to none,
