Hey Lotus Nation, wondering if you can help with this.

I’ve installed a new stereo in my car and I’m getting a brutal noise through the speakers. The obvious thing points towards a grounding issue, but I’ve teated numerous points around the vehicle to no avail. The obvious like the seat bolts and other random ones. Nothing seems to make the problem go away. It can be heard when the engine is off, and gets worse when under power with alternator whine. I just can’t figure it out.

I do have an unusual noise under the hood in the area of the ECU, that can be heard when the car ignition is on, but hasn’t been started. Although I can’t say that is where the noise is coming from. I’ll have to do a closer inspection with the clam raised. The video below shows the under hood noise.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Do all Elise’s make this noise?

I'm not sure what is causing your noise, hearing the noise through the speakers while the car isn't running eliminates most of the usual suspects. You didn't mention what year your car is, is it possible that your recirculation pump is running when isn't supposed to? Your noise sounds a bit like a motor whine and that could easily feed back noise through the stereo. If it is running when it's not supposed to there are several components that could be faulty. I've attached some selected pages out of the manual to give you some info about it just in case you needed it, the wiring diagram is for a 2005 Elise.

The noise is your throttle body, mine does it too. Unplug the large black wiring harness connector and plug it back in, the sound will go away until you start the car next time.

I should mention unplugging the harness while it's on will throw 2 codes. Just clear them.

Thanks for the response. I haven't had a chance to test this out. My car is a 2007, but I'll take a look at the diagrams and go from there.

Thanks. I'll give this a try too.

Just discovered this on my 07 today too. Any updates? I also just put in a new stereo but it still makes the noise even when I unplug it.

You get the sound with the TB harness unplugged? Have you checked it's not coming from your speakers due to bad ground?

I unplugged the stereo and still get it. It’s definitely coming from in the engine compartment.

It’s the DBW throttle body. Go push the gas pedal and see if that noise changes.
