re: roll cage

Always a problem with a small Lotus.

In this case, the roof is removable. I can always get out through the door with the roof on. The door is just the skin mounted on the original swinginging mechanism. The door latch is not stock.

It is not really the cage, but the door that is the problem, here.

I am 5' 11" and 230lbs. I know, need to loose weigt to make the car lighter :)

Anton

P.S. The cage is mounted in such a way that the mounting plates have 2 or 3 planes of interacting with the fram rails. In other words, although, it is bolted in, it does not move. Also the cage extends to fron shock towers. It is made from chrome-moly, thin wall tubing.
It stiffens the car up significantly. I can almost get rid of the rear sub-frame.
Maybe. I will...

Nice, it looks very subtle.

Quick question about your cage; are those bars removable in case the driver needs to bail in an emergency?

My BMW M3 Dymags fit the Elise!

My M3 Dymags fit the Elise dead on, as shown at 100mm ride height! The offset is correct 25mm. It clears the massive Brembos with 2 inches to space. That is incredible, since the caliper sticks out 2.25 inches. The rotor is only 328mm, so not very tall.

The wheel is 18x10. The tire is a little big at 275x35x18. It does look like I will need a flare on the front to keep the right offset. Since it is a Carbon Fibre Dymag, it weighs about 15lbs.

However, I do not have matching 18x13 rears and Dymag is out of business as of December 1st!

Anton

P.S. GM bolt pattern 5x4.75 = 5x120.6mm is very close to BMW 5x120mm, so the wheel is almost on.

I need wheels! + a funny story

I had some Fikse wheels from my other race car. I was going to re-hoop a pair of them and order a set of new fronts for the Lotus. They barely cleared the rear caliper. We had to make 3mm spacers. Then we tried calling Fikse. No answer. He went out of business in September!

We were trying to figure out what to do. Finally saw my M3 wheels in the shop and tried them on. As per previous post, they fit dead on. It is a Dymag CF wheel, so it is nice and light. We call Dymag to make the rears, no answer! Dymag filed for bankruptcy on December 1!!!

2 strikes!!!

So suddenly, I need a brand new set of wheels to clear some really large calipers on the front and 12 inch rims with 4 inch backspacing for the rear.

I have called CCW, BBS, Forgeline and HRE. They all came back with a solution. I am looking for more suggestions... I will contact Kodiak on Monday.

re: Dymag

I own 2 set each of Fikse's and Dymag wheels.

I really wanted to run Dymags on the Lotus. It is a great wheel. You can feel the difference in the way the car feels right away. My M3 with Dymags is a totally different car on the track.

I have another set of racing wheels for he M3, I will try to find out if Dymag is out of business or in receivership or if someone bought the molds. All the factory CNC machinery was sold 2 weeks ago. I need a set of 18x13 rears, since I have the fronts!

If someone has any more information or a good source of wheels, please, advise.

re: Dymags

Found out today that Dymag will re-open under different ownership Q1 of 2010. HER is taking orders for their stuff. There is a waiting list.

Kidiak wheels bought out Fikse's inventory and tooling. Fiks always made a beautiful light wheel good for street or racing. Kodiak always made a good reasonable priced racing wheel. The combination should be very good.

I can get HRE wheels at a really good price (for HRE), as well.

So lot's of choices.

Hey Anton,

How many mm do your hubs drop the suspension?
Do yours perform the same role as the Nitron hubs sold
by S111?

The hubs in these pics drop the suspension about 25mm. They are hubs just like any other suspension hub for a Lotus.

I have the CNC program, so I can make multiple configurations.

The pics here run Corvette hub bearings. I can make for stock or Corvette hub bearings, 0 to 25mm drop. Also stock or Brembo mounts. Corvette hubs are good to 1000hp and lots of offset. Brembo mounts allow the use of a number of Brembo or other calipers as mount offset is standard. The rear toe-link can be made for stock or threaded bolt mount (very strong).

Also can furnish semi-finished pieces for you to complete.

I also use the proper material. The others have bad notch resistance qualities i.e. if you scratch it or damage it, it will break or you have to immediately replace it. The aluminum alone is $300 per hub. Almosr the same price as Ti, but lighter :) This aircraft alloy is stronger than mild steel.
