A few buddies and I are renting out an airfield with two landing strips, each about 1.75miles long.

I am planning on trying to top out the Elise. I believe top speed is 150MPH. The roads are obviously paved and smooth. With this said, how safe is doing 150MPH in an Elise?

Slightly embarassed to admit, but I wouldn't be surprised a small gust of wind to pass by and send the car airborne.

Any success stories / tips?!?!

BTW, my car is completeley stock aside from a Stage II Exhaust. No aero mods.

It would take more than 2 miles to reach 145-150 in na elise. A vf2 rev 400 or ff275 may get to 150 in that distance I get scared after 140 in the elise. Felt fine in my mitsu at 170 though. The drag coef is way bigger for the elise. I'd say 125-130 and check your brakes and tires! Wear a helmet! Best of luck! They do that in homestead but have yet to try in the elise.

I dont think you will see 150. Maybe you will see an indicated 150 which is actually much less. Bring along a GPS.

Its probably not safe or prudent to do 150 mph in any car but at least you have chosen the most appropriate venue. Make sure your tires are in good shape and have no nails or patches etc. You will most likely be fine.

Obviously wind will have a lot to do with it, and I do not encourage this behavior, although I'm glad you've rented an airfield to do it.

I'd say with the right conditions, and a car in tip-top shape, you'll be in the high 130-s.

It will also depend on if you are tracking that speed with your speedo, or a 3rd party utility. Lotus Speedos can be, encouraging...

And FWIW it is a somewhat touchy subject on LT. In general I can tell you this:

These cars are pretty crappy in terms of top speed, as they simply lack the power to go fast. Even if you add power, you then run out of gear quickly. Glad to hear you aren't trying this on public roads. As others have said be sure to check your tires, lugs, wear a helmet etc. A 150mph an issue with the car or driver can turn ugly fast! Be safe!

When my 05 was NA I managed to get 146mph on the GPS. With Rev400 it will run out of 6th gear quite easily. I jumped off the throttle at 159mph on the GPS (the speedo was maxed out). With standard tires / redline I think it will run out of gears slightly north of 160 FWIW.

Not bad. How long was the strip to get to 146MPH?

Also, assuming Rev400 is a tune?

at 130 mph = 216.6 fps

135 mph = 224.9 fps

140 mph = 233.2 fps

150 mph = 249.9 fps

so: 1.75 mile strip = 9,240 feet, *IF* you magically started at and held 135 mph you would have a max of 41 seconds of woo-hoo.

MoTor trend mag did an 11-car drag race on an airfield. Ended up
With 11 cracked windshields. 8-(. This year they brought a street sweeper to the event.

A front splitter on your Elise will do a lot to make the front feel more planted. Sixth gear, 20 mph per 1000 RPMs, 8000 RPMs would equal 160 (if you have the HP). NA elise, probably would only see 160 while falling off a cliff.

Better be a HIGH cliff.........on the Sun. rotfl. Too lazy to fully justify it, but it rhymes with urinal viscocity

You are going to need more space to top any car out. Nice you got your hands on air strip though. Remember to leave some space to shut down from speed, KE= 1/2 MV^2

DON'T TRY THIS W/O A SPLITTER!!!! I had my old SC up to 150 indicated on the speedo once and 140 indicated several times. Before I put a splitter on it, the front end started to feel unstable and "floaty" at 120. The splitter made a huge difference at high speed. Be careful. As others have pointed out, things can go bad in a hurry at 100 mph +.
