Needs some tuning, some engine break-in, then off to the dyno.

Thanks folks.

Anyone else think the valves are ticking a little too loud? I'm concerned about the valve clearance, it was supposed to be preset -- anyone else's hardened SS values and eibach valve springs make this much noise at startup?

I checked the valve clearance for intake/exhaust and they were within tolerance, but at the extreme range of tolerance -- i.e.

Exhaust was #4 0.32 #3 0.30 #2 0.20 #1 0.26 - range is 0.18 - 0.32mm
Intake was #4 0.10, #3 0.18, #2 0.16, #1 0.08 range is 0.08 - 0.18mm

All shims were in place.

I think I might pull the valve cover and check again, they do seem very noisey to me.

Rob,
when i put the new head on my 944 it was loud for the 1st 5-10 minutes, then the ticking went away.
that motor looks so clean all nice and new.
good luck with it.

Ok, guess I'll not worry about it, just seems louder than Engine #2 restart.

Phil's fuel setup worked right from the get go - -just had to add a 20 amp fuse. No leaks, need to set the fuel pressure to 53 psi -- gonna use Power to Win I hope (to monitor) -- EFI should be reading fuel pressure now, hopefully in psi but I doubt it ;) The walbro 255 pump is super quiet in there, expected it to make more noise.

Thanks Fish, definitely not new -- need to work some more on the wiring cleanup -- what a mess.

Oh, the Weapon R header fit pretty good, needed to expand a couple of the flange holes, grind a smooth edge on the 2 into 1 tube receivers, and minor adjustment to the parts holding them together -- otherwise it was a good fit, no U tube issues at all.

Bavarian,

Actually it's RacePak dash, doesn't have anything to do with EFi. I believe Phil has the EFi dash which is very similar, only not as good ;) hehe

Oh boy, a conflict of opinions -- what to do -- tell ya what, I'll run it for 10 minutes with varying throttle keeping it below 6K rpm and do a better audio recording and repost video to get some more thoughts on the valve noise, "better safe than sorry" is hard for me to ignore ... ugh

Rob,

The piston slap will be a touch louder on this engine with Mahls until warm. It's the nature of the beast. However, once warm it should quiet to down to a similar noise level to stock...

The mic sound on the video has a lot of garbage in it, so we may be hearing a louder noise than what reality is????

If you're getting a lot of ticking and clattering noise even when warm, then there's likely something amiss in the head assembly... Could be whole host of things causing that though...

Another thing to check is your VVT solenoid may be clattering away making the sound we're hearing in the vid??? Don't panic if that's the case, as the fix is easy and would be associated with your map/firmware/wiring. So if yes, and since you're updating to the new firmware to full VVT control. Make sure that you're using a VVT map with your VVT firmware if that's the case and the check sum on your ECU is reading correctly. I can walk you through that diagnostic over the phone...

Do you have a way to monitor oil pressure with your new dash? Low oil pressure can cause the head to be loud.

You're close so to getting her on the road, so stay positive:up:

Best,

Phil

Rob,

Sounds loud, maybe it's just the way it's recorded. One thing I noticed, there are 8 clearances referenced, not 16. Are you measuring at the roller? Measure between the shim and rocker, 16 measurements. Why? Because you can still have a problem where clearances between the individual valves are not in spec:

Phil,

Oil pressure is good phil, 78-80 psi @ cooler oil temps and I would expect that to drop to 60-65 psi if I allowed the car to run for more than 1-2 minutes (I don't want it to idle for 10 mins). I call you tonight, Kris updated the firmware and map while I was at his shop back in Feb so it should have the VVT (as that's the map currently in it) -- I moved the wires over in connector per Kris's instructions. The only difference between my EFi setup and yours is that I used the wheelspeed wire (that was not be used) as my fan control wire (and DBW of course).

Much appreciate it if we chat tonight and go over EFi VANOS to make sure I got it working as expected.

Cheers, Rob.

In the situation above, where there are uneven clearances between the valve pair and the rocker, I've heard that it can create excessive noise. I don't know this first hand though. Would only take a few minutes to pull the valve cover and take a quick measurement at the 16 shims.

Good drawing John. I think it tells the story perfectly well and an excellent suggestion of things to check... Fortunately, another pretty easy thing to fix for Rob if it turns out that he has a few valves that were shimmed incorrectly:up:

I measured at the roller only. Hmmm...I was thinking about that when I was measuring and asked the same question "but what about individual valves?". Is this something that one will not find in a Toyota service manual?

Good suggestion, thanks.

I have to pull some of the IC tubes off anyway to clean up my wiring, doesn't take long to get the IC off and valve cover off (heck I can probably leave the injectors and fuel rail attached.

FYI, when I got the head back from Kris there were some markings across from each valve pair that said "10 loose" "9 loose" "9 loose" "9 loose" -- same on the other side (numbers were all within 1) -- I'm not exactly sure what they mean but they certainly don't match up to my roller measurements.

Toyota revised the method of measuring. Old manuals show the 16 measurement procedure. Newer manuals measure at the roller. The only reason to measure at the roller is that it's easier and faster. Personally, I think the wrong way to do it.

*Important note* - the clearances ARE different at the valve tip as compared to clearances at the roller. The arc of the rocker arm has a 'leverage' (for lack of a better term) effect (credit Manny for the information). I can locate the valve shim clearance spec, if you need them.
