Reminds me of those PS5s that were selling for like $10k on eBay at one point.
Struck me as money laundering or hiding payment for other illegal services.
This is not quite as obviously cover for anything, but still seems nuts

Having attended a few collector/exotic car auctions I've witnessed a number of "shills" among the sheep, er bidders. They help get the auction bids rolling again when the bidding stalls below reserve. Shills are simply part of the business and easy to spot if you know what to look for. Occasionally they wind up the "winning" bid, but not very often.

If you study auction theory to any degree, there is a good deal of writing on why many bidders pay more than the item is worth. Hubris, fomo, etc., all factor in to this. What's unusual is that unlike a Superbird, say, this isn't a car that people grew up with, and other current examples are for sale so the market price is pretty well know. While people like to talk about their Lotus CoP, having the only car ever made in pistachio pearl, every one has the same engine, transmission, rear end, radio, whatever, which is what tends to get scrutiny with older cars, where the options lists ran for pages.

Having said that, Barnum is quoted as saying, I don't care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right, and this buyer has already scored on the forum posting count - me included - so maybe that's something that was worth the extra $$. Personally, I don't think that car will ever sell again for anything near that, but hey, to each their own.

This is 100% an outlier. Means nothing. Stuff there was selling for much more than it should of, depending on the vehicle. Someone paid $200K for a 2022 GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Pack Heritage edition. Car had an MSRP of $104,455. And it was mislabeled as a "Golden Ticket" car (meaning the $10K painted stripes & CF Track Pack) as it wasn't since the stripes are vinyl. I can't imagine this actually goes through after the fact. Total shill bid I think. Hell, my old dealership where I worked has a Golden Ticket Heritage and they want $30K over ($154K) and that person could have saved $50K. So either shill or a few liquored up bidders. Moral of the story, in-person auctions are never 100% on the up & up.

"Ever" is a long time
15 years ago I might have agreed with this. The faction that wants to ban or eliminate ICE is growing.. and thus the pool of interested parties is slowly shrinking. I think over the top prices for ICE stuff (broad market) will shrink in the future.
However, incredibly rare vintage vehicles of lust and provenance will likely still appreciate like "Art" does now. (I.E. 60's GTO Ferrari, AC Cobra's, etc.)

Yup. My .02 cents.

Will an Evora sell for 150k in 30 years? I'm in the definitely yes camp.

I'm also in the 100k today at 3% inflation has the same buying power as 243k in 30 years camp 😂
