My son drives a Volvo 780 with a B230FT engine. We need to replace the head gasket so we're in the process of tearing down the top side.

Several months ago he picked up a used turbo and manifold from a later model... he said it's a better turbo that will spin up faster and the newer manifold should flow better.

The manifold is cast iron and has some light surface rust. The manifold in the car still looks very clean.

The question(s):

What's the best way to clean the manifold, inside and out? Can I sandblast the exterior or is that a bad idea?

What's the best way to clean out the carbon build up inside?

He spends a lot of time on a Volvo forum -- turbobricks -- but he's not a meticulous as I am.
