Exige slower than Mitsubishi Evo MR on Top Gear

Anybody catch the 5/30 episode of Top Gear? The Stig drove the Evo MR faster around the track than the new Exige (although the difference was less than a second: 1:26.0 vs. 1:26.9).

The Carrera GT was tested in the same episode: 1:19.8!

Edit: The Evo tested is one of 4 different Evo models available in the UK, 3 of them MR variants. The base price for the tested Evo MR FQ-320 is about the same as the Exige.

Yep, caught it. Personally, I think all the lap times on the board have huge variances due to weather and condition differences. You can be sure that the STi is slower than the Evo because they were tested on the same day, and you can be sure that a car that runs faster in the wet than another in the dry is faster, but other comparisons have varying degrees of accuracy. Like everything else on the show, it's for entertainment purposes only.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the MR was faster.

I never seem to catch Top Gear, what time/channel is it on? (Preferably Directv)
no surprise here...the MR is a total freakin' beast.

too bad it looks so bad to my eye...I'd probably be all over one (as would many others I suspect)
Lotus: If you are listening...I WANT AN EXIGE!!!

SEND THEM HERE!

Here is my order:
CO with the motorsport pack.
Dan , was the time of the Evo MR on a wet or dry track?

How do you guys watch Top Gear on TV?
Dry. Still, Top Gear doesn't bother to record temperatures either.

i would think that the Exige would beat it on a dry track, no problem.
The Exige lap wasn't wet as defined by other tests where a wet time was noted, but it did have a puddle here and there. Didn't see too many in the corners, but it's impossible to characterize the conditions from a video. TG classified it as a dry lap.
In the dry an Evo should be a bit slower than an exige, they were slower than my Elise when I only had 190bhp, they are close enough that the driver could make the difference but the Evo and the scooby are easy to drive close to the limit due to all the clever diffs traction control etc so perhaps allow poor drivers to be closer to the lap times of a good driver.
However in the wet the Evo or a Scooby will romp away from an exige or pretty much any 2wd car.
The Exige test was not on a dry track - it makes all the difference with the 48's.

Yes it sounds great... However you need to realize that the European EVO is a far superior car to the tame one they send state side. Thanks to the AYC (Active Yaw Control) the car is able to distribute power to the 4 wheels independantly. So while three wheels might be braking one may be at full throttle.
This is what usually happens when cars come to the USA. The really cool features get left out of the US model.

You would not see a performance this impressive from the US car. The Evo FQ330 is an even faster variant that will also never make it's way stateside.

EVO MR

FQ330
So.. is the EVO that is tested $51K or $32K??

the MR will reportedly be $33K in the US

Not sure which test they are referring to, however all Euro EVOs have AYC. The FQ330 also has 330 Bhp and will do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds:eek:

PS: The FQ330 is not available in the USA.

BTW... The Fed Elise with sport pack and no touring pack should be a little quicker than the Exige (Exige is heavier). I think it will be neck and neck with the MR or even quicker.

I think it's BBC 2 in England, AFAIK we don't get it here in the US.

Too bad they don't carry it in BBC America, although if you go to their web page you can ask them to please carry Top Gear on it.

The Top Gear magazine is available in the US.

I guess I am going to have to add a rear wing (spoiler) onto my Elise :D Ok, point taken, maybe over 100mph. Don't get me wrong, I love the Exige, but I think Lotus needs to offer something more than virtually the same car as the Elise for $60K.
