I know this must of been asked before, I have an Exige Cup Car with Yokohama A005 slicks , what do you run for tire pressure ? I had been running 25 f and 26 r cold but meet another Cup car owner who is running 19 f and 20 r.
Cold temps mean absolutely squat unless you know the correct start point from much track time on an exact same track, with exact same and consistent driver, exact same car setup, and exact same track temp.
It's the No1way to spot someone who does not track/race much and is giving you bad advice - they give you cold temp recommendations.
Aim for 26 hot front, 29 hot rear on Yoko. Bleed/inflate them to this after every single session throughout day with a PROPER guage. Check cold pressures once they cool down back at home and you will see different pressure each corner which proves how it is impossible to set cold with guesswork; but DO start from these pressures next time at that track, but you will need to bleed/inflate to get to your hot targets again as conditions are never the same.
That's great advice....cold pressures are useless in and of themselves. And do get a good, accurate gauge. For your next step up, get a contact pyrometer. Longacre and Summit Racing sell several models with memory, etc. Don't use those silly surface laser things....the data won't be worth much for tire temps, although they can be OK for track temp, rotor/calipers, and the like. On the Yokos, you want 190-220 F, even across the tread width within 7-10% or less. The temps will tell you your optimal hot pressures and if you are pushing hard enough.
Benefits: You can dial in your hot pressures, optimize camber/toe, and get the Yokos in the temperature range at which they perform. And if your significant other is with you, or friends, you give them something highly useful to do, and they can give you very useful tire data for a better setup.
One more thing....tires initially shed heat very quickly, so measure as soon as you get in the pits. As soon as you stop, people are taking measurements before you can even exit the car.
