Hi all, we have a V6 Cup R here in the U.K. and are wondering about running the car on slicks. In the U.K. we don’t have any cars on slicks as the Cup series uses Avon ZZR tyres, but I noticed that across the pond the Lotus Cup USA series has the cars on slicks.

What modifications, if any, have been done to the V6 Cup Rs in America for them to run slicks? We’ve been told that oil starvation may be a problem on corners with only a baffled sump?

We haven't seen any oil starvation issues on the handful of CupR's we have in the Colonies.... at least not yet. I personally log lots of data including oil pressure and have not personally noted a problem over ~ 6500 track miles.

However, the stock Bosch ABS will not be happy with slicks, due in part to the differing ODs of the slicks (in our case it was Yokohama slicks) that fit compared to the stock-sized R-comps, as well as the additional grip of slicks. The ABS becomes overly intrusive and prevents you from using the proper braking technique. Solution -- either a peddle box or motorsport ABS setup.

Also, you will need to alter the geo to optimize handling when going to the slicks....more negative camber front and rear, which will require modification to the front hubs (milling) and the rear "cam-plate" (relocation), and adjustment of ride height to achieve the necessary rake.

Thanks for that Jack. How many G do you pull with slicks on?

We have Bosch Motorsport ABS on the car, so that should be fine. We also run full Avon wets with the same size sidewall as slicks so I suppose having not had any problems that side of things would be ok.

I've seen 1.5, 1.6 G's with a little help from some "track camber". ;)

You can check out some of my CupR videos on my Youtube channel to see real time data, including G's and oil pressure at different parts of the track.... e.g., screen shot below shows 1.5 Gs and oil pressure of 52psi going into a bowl at my home track.

I also had the Bosch Motorsport ABS installed and it's great.

Geo settings ....
camber: -2.8* front; -2.9* rear
toe: 1mm toe-out per side front; 1.5mm toe-in per side rear


Ride height and rake set to Lotus recommendations for the CupR.

Wow ol, that’s a fair amount of camber, but needed I suppose with the added cornering speeds.

Couple more questions...

Which oil sump do you have fitted to the car and have you upgraded your suspension bushes at all?

Tire temps and wear seem to support that amount of camber, at least for my driving style and local track configs.

Sump is the standard steel baffled one which came on the car from LMS, not the expensive aluminum beauty that Swindon made early on for Lotus or the Moroso pan.

No upgraded bushes/mono-balls....yet. Do you have a good source for the V6 Exige?

Unfortunately I don’t have a good source for bushes, all I know is that the car had the bushes on when we bought it from it’s previous owner.

Sounds like it might be worth putting a set of slicks on one of our sets of wheels and having a go... will let you know how we get on if we try them!
