So I picked my car up from HRM on Saturday. Ran fine during the shake-down drive, but after trailering her 4 hours home and starting her up, the check engine light came on. I scanned it and it was a fast idle error. Sure enough, she's idling at 1100-1200. Should I just adjust the idle stop or could there be something else wrong?

Also, sometimes when I get off the gas the idle hangs at very high speed (anywhere up to 2 or 3K). Sometimes it comes down after a moment, but sometimes I need to blip the throttle to get it down. I checked the action of the butterfly valve and the springs seems more than willing to return it to the stop. Could it be the cable? Any ideas???

Thanks!
Tom

I had this exact problem after adjusting my gas pedal's return stop. I didn't give it enough of a gap, and sometimes the cable wouldn't pull all the way back. If it idles lower when you use your foot to pull up on the gas pedal, then this is likely your problem.

IMHO, it's may be as simple as adjusting the throttle set screw. If you look at the throttle body, you will see a screw/bolt/whatever you'd like to call it. That's what sets the stop position when the throttle returns to 0, or idle. From what I understand, it can be difficult to get it just right, because it is touchy. Mine was set too low when I got my 05 car, but I fixed it by SLOWLY adjusting it. If you decide to adjust it, be sure to use a marker to mark the original starting position, as a point of reference. I found the throttle body set screw adjust easy, and I by no means whatsoever a mechanic. Do a search for more info on the subject; there should be plenty. Definately look into the cable issue though, as well.

Thanks guys.

I looked at the adjuster last night and there was yellow paint marking its location. Is that from the factory or did the previous owner adjust it?

I will definitely check the pedal first though, as that would explain both the fast idle and the sticking idle.

Thanks again!

Oh yeah, I didn't notice you mentioned the sticking idle.
