Federal safety officials have given the Lotus Elise a three-year exemption from U.S. headlight and bumper standards.
Group Lotus PLC plans to begin selling the four-cylinder, mid-engine roadster in the United States in May. The company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last year that it had spent $27 million modifying the British-built car to comply with U.S. standards but could not find practical, affordable ways to meet the headlight and bumper rules. It promises that a new Elise, to be introduced in 2006, will comply.
