Flying with a helmet - bringing a helmet on an airplane

I'm going to be flying to SC to take part in the Lemons this weekend and I haven;t yet figured out how to transport my helmet. Does an XL helmet (HJC SJ-12) fit in the overhead bins? Can you carry a separate piece of carry-on luggage apart from the helmet?

Edit: I realize that I should have used a better title such as bringing a helmet on an airplane :)

sorted :)
I have done it. No problems.
Me three no problems.

I'm a bit retentive about my helmet (my head goes there right?). So, I keep a close eye on my helmet. On my last trip to Europe, someone decided to pound on my bag (helmet inside) to get another bag to fit in the bin.

It'll fit, but if you can't keep an eye on it, I'd put it by your feet.

Best of luck in the Lemons!!
I always wear my helmet on my head when it taking it with me on a flight. I never fail to take home the most attractive flight attendant when I do. I fully recommend you try it.
Thanks guys

Depending on the mood of the gate agent, the helmet will be your "one personal item". That means you can carry one piece of luggage still (e.g. a rollerboard). If you need to carry a briefcase, laptop, or something too, you're back to wearing the helmet. What a bonus! Extra luggage and the hottest flight attendant! :D

Plus if you wear it, they might let you board early.

......or not at all seeing how most people relate helmets with crashes and that tends to upset the other passengers! :panic: :D
My boyfriend has flown with his helmet w/o issues of the helmet. They were more concerned about the magnets in his magnetic tank bag (motorcycle). They wanted him to leave the magnets, lol.
For airlines enforcing the 1-bag and 1 "personal item" rule, just make sure you count this as your "personal item". I've routinely carried a helmet onboard commercail aircraft repeatedly, with no issues. Having it in a helmet bag, affixed (buckled to the collapsable handle atop) to your roll-on seems to help keep it relatively inconspicuous, too.
I wear my helmet on EVERY flight, but I keep it hidden under my turban.
