The Angeles Crest Highway, which passes through the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest, is one of the more challenging roads in the country. Some of the hairpin mountain turns are so sharp that you can't take them at over 15 or 20 mph. A great car to take there would be the new Lotus Elise convertible, so you can drive in style from your hotel (the highway is about an hour outside of Los Angeles), and then test one of the world's best handling, most nimble sports cars on that beautiful, twisty route.
