I'm assuming this one is for the Exige?

Got a set of these a few months ago. All I can say is that I should have done it sooner

So happy you liked them.

Michael, do you still have a set?
I just damaged my under clam. Crappy bumps everywhere here!

So to avoid further heart attacks...

I have got a 2001 S2 Elise. By the look of it - no clam difference.

But are you willing to ship to The Netherlands and what would it cost me?
Thx in advance

Rogier

Short drive on a local twisty road up a local mountain. Big rock in the middle of the road in a blind spot. No way to go, but straight.

Luckily I have the clam protectors sold by sirlotus and my clam is fine. The only damage to the clam protector was on the rubber front cover. The rubber got removed and it has a scrape.

I looked underneath the car but did not see any visible damage. I will inspect it more carefully next time I lift the car.

So far I was happy I had the protectors installed to prevent a couple of parking lot scrapes. Now I am really glad I got them, as this saved me from clam damage by this rock.

Afterwards I took a picture of the rock as a reminder ...
Get protection now, before it is too late.

What is the ideal way to mount them? Will silicone be sufficient?
You wouldn't want them coming off while on the highway.
I used special 2 component adhesive from Bison. Should have done the job with the clam (polyester) and the polycarbonate protection. Unfortunately it did not hold. But it might be that the underside of the clam was badly (re)painted cause its the protection is covered in Magnetic Blue:(

I used regular silicone caulk, spreading an even layer and it has been on my car for 6 years :).
Michael
These look great!

What happens if you damage one and have to replace it? If you initially put it on very securely with silicone caulk, how do you remove it to replace it without damaging the clam?

It would be tough to damage one, because they are virtually unbreakable.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Remove any dirt/polish/grease from the underside of the front clam.

Spread and even layer of silicone caulk over the whole unpainted side of the protectors.

Let cure for 24 hours.

Sometimes some support is required to hold the protectors in place while the silicone cures.

Obviously I'm not the supplier, but if I were securing these protectors with silicone, I'd use a 1/4" bead of silicone around the perimeter. Some arm-chair speculation...if 1 square inch of silicone would support 20 pounds in tension, then a 36" bead of silicone 1/4" wide would support 180 pounds. You're also interested in peel strength, but my SWAG tells me it would be more than adequate for this installation.

To remove the protector secured with a bead of silicone, I'd use some fishing line or leader line to saw through the silicone. The remaining silicone could be removed with a new razor blade (holding the sharp edge just off the paint). If you covered the entire surface of the protector with silicone, removing it in the way I've described might be very difficult.

:) Virtually.

Dude... my last name is Murphy. If there is a way to break something, trust me, my law dictates that I will be the one who finds it.

But all joking aside, have you removed one, and if so, how did you do it?

Excellent approach. Thanks for putting that out there.

Nothing is unbreakable, however under "practical" circumstances polycarbonate will withstand any impact you subject it to.
In 6 years my protectors have withstood mulitible impacts, have not broken, and are still functioning.
I have never removed a clam protector.
Michael
Maybe Sir Lotus is saying if you manage to break one of his protectors, removing it will be the least of your repair problems...

Glen
Here is the deal...if you break one I will replace it at no charge.

I used a very technical method for distributing the "up-force" as evenly as possible whilst installing these over the holiday weekend: That is right. Snap On Frying Pan. If I break it, I get a new one.... for life.
