Got to work this morning after a pleasant drive on I-5 and the handbrake would not latch in the on position. It's like the ratcheting mechnism failed inside the handle. The button pushes in and is spring-loaded out OK, no problem with the button, just the ratchet pawl is not engaging.

Anyone have any ideas what the typical failure could be? Gonna be another sunny day here in Seattle:D:up:

Make sure the handle is not bent to the left or right, otherwise the paw will not engage and lock. Some people use the hand brake as a grip to lift themselves out of the car; this can cause it to bend side-wards over time.

Thanks Adder, turns out it was an easy fix, bolt holding the ratchet sector in the base of the brake handle fell out (!), recovered it, screwed it back in with a new lockwasher and klaar is kees!
