Is the hardtop option something I need to decide when buying the car or can I buy the hardtop a couple months after I buy the car? Is it more like an accessorie (such as a a sport bra) or more like an option (such as leather seating)?

I suspect if you want it to match your paint well, you should buy as an option. Otherwise you will need the dealership to do paint matching.

Perhaps someone in Europe can respond with their experience.

I don't know about Lotus, but I know with Mazda, the Miata hardtops cost significantly less buying them with the car rather than buying them later from the parts department. At the very least, Lotus would likely save money on shipping costs if the hardtop were shipped with the car.
