I asked this question in the "Hi, I am new here" section, but figured this was more suited as a general discussion item, since it's a problem I'm experiencing with the car.

For some reason, I am unable to rev my Elise passed 6300 RPM. Even with the car fully warmed up (temp about 190 F), I get the red RPM tell tale light at 6000 RPM and then I start bouncing off the limiter at 6300 RPM. Only once was I able to rev up to 8000 RPM after I had switched on valet mode and then switched it back off...but then I tried again 3 minutes later and the 6300 RPM limiter was back...

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Is there perhaps a valve that controls this that could be broken? If so, where is it located? An easy fix?

Thanks!

The VVTL-i oil pressure.. controller.. thingie.. could be out of adjustment, or loose.

Sorry I forgot the actual word for it, I think T Phil fixed a problem of the same nature
for someone recently, where the shop had failed to tighten it.

I was google'ing for pictures, but apparently I'm bad at google.

According to the owner's manual they do. You activate it with the small button on the keyfob when the ignition is in the "I" position.

Demonized, thank you for the link. How can I tell if the valve is broken or needs adjustment? How do you adjust it?

I had the same problem a few months back, even though the car ran it turned out to be the fuse for the ECU. Check the fuses in the engine bay in the 2 small boxes on the firewall, i bet your VVTi fuse is fine, but the ECU fuse is blown. Mine did the exact same thing, down to the flashing at 6300 and the random ability to rev higher with no vvti.

Check/ clean your mass air flow sensor.
Are you using a non-stock air filter?

Now your next question is why did the fuse blow in the first place. I've got a penny you can borrow for next time. LOL

Just wanted to update this, in case anyone else runs into the problem. Replacing the fuse did fix the problem (it is a 5 amp fuse).
Awesome! Glad it worked. Cost me an hour's labor at Parkplace to find that one out! I pulled the valvecover, i checked the VVT solenoid, i checked the VVT fuse... but never the ECU fuse, 'cause the car ran. Go figure. (Fuse blew when I jumpstarted the car once.)

Yeah, I have a feeling mine blew for the same reason. I had to jumpstart the car a few times a few days after purchasing it because, unlike my old car, keeping the iPod plugged in overnight does in fact drain a car's battery :wallbang:. Lesson learned!

Thanks again!

I just checked my ECU fuse. They are all good. When my car hits VVT it loses all power and car stumbles. On the dyno it looks like the fuel and timing is cut. My car is far from stock. Adaptronic ECU turbo car now. Can not get car to run with VVt activated. I moved to 5k same issue. Set to 6 k same issue. My only fix for now was to set VVT for 8k so it will never turn on. Any ideas on my issue?

Turn off your Traction Control and see if it still does it.
