How com it is not legal? From looking at mine I cant see any reason why.. its lockable and its a fuel cap.. what else does it need to do?

The actual cap for the fuel tube..or the external flap. The Federal cap has to seal well enough to avoid the ECU setting off a check engine light. Does the lockable cap seal?

Someone posted the reason a while back. Can't recall what it was. Anyone remember?

I was told US cars are required to have a cover, ie exposed gas caps not allowed.

Also, Lotus engineering said the cap is configured for the engine management system and changing to another one could trigger a fault (as Stan has said)

Beside having to perform the emissions functions, DOT regulations require the fuel caps to be covered - i.e. they have to have a door over them. I don't know if the non-US spec. opening/cap could be retro fitted to the US cars...
